Take a look underneath for cable running to each rear wheel & then come together at one cable going forward. Adjustment should be in that "Y" area.

Were they recalled because of a problem with the hand brake


Enter your VIN number here. I had my Lexus fitted with new disc brakes and pads at a non-Lexus dealer and had the same problem. I took it back and they tightened it up. When I went to my Lexus dealership for my 6 month service, I mentioned it to them that the brake wouldn't hold. They came back and told me that although I had had new brakes and discs, they had assembled the handbrake incorrectly. $120 to reassemble and it was fine. Lesson learned :>) Kia Recall Kia Canada

I HAVE A 2007 DODGE CHARGER AND CAN NOT SHIFT OUT OF PARK. WHAT COULD BE THE PROBLEM?


Sounds like the gearshift interlock is not working. I assume you know you have to hold your foot on the brake with the ignition switched on. Check all the fuses. If they're ok you may need to take it to an auto electrician unless you can find the fault in the interlock system yourself. It may be that the switch may be faulty or out of adjustment. It is located down on the brake pedal.

Clutch is Hydraulic, there is no adjustment besides free play and you should not adjust that

if it has rear drum brakes then yes the adjustment would be made by adjusting the shoes out tighter to the drum

The handbrake doesn't hold the car on steep slopes, only gentler slopes - and even then I hold my breath! It's had new pads and the cable has been tightened too, but the problem's still there...


I think you should look into the possibility that your rear brake pads, and your parking brake pads are different items. Replacing one is not necessarily replacing the other. Many vehicles have different brake surfaces, and adjustments thereto, for parking brakes. Find the person who did the back brakes and ask him if there is another set of pads for the parking, and if so, did he replace those too? If they do not know, call a dealer parts department or a plain jane car parts store. I notice advance parts seems to indicate a parking brake shoe set for your car, in addition to the back brakes, but they do not sell them.

Ignition switch will not turn on. Battery is good. Steering wheel is locked, What should we do?


Quite often that will happen when vehicle parked with wheels turned, and/or vehicle on a slope, so try to avoid that in future.If nothing else, when parked on a slope, stop, keep foot on brake pedal, apply parking brake, put transmission in neutral, then take foot off brake pedal and wait for parking brake to stop vehicle rolling, then shift it into park. When leaving, put foot on brake pedal, shift to drive or reverse whatever direction your going, then release parking brake. Sounds like a lot to remember but you won't have to pull hard on shifter as before, and it could save a lot of money on transmission repairs down the road. Always try to park with wheels straight as well.
Now, with that said, if you parked with wheels turned, try hard to turn steering wheel in same direction wheels are turning, just slightly, as you try to turn key. Sometimes a quick yank in that direction will do it. Also make sure shifter is all the way in park before you try it. If your on a slope try rocking vehicle slightly up slope as you push/pull shift lever in to park and try to turn key at same time. If no luck, try pushing brake pedal real hard and try to turn key. Let me know how it goes.

It is only a four bolt sistem to change after the brake *** is removed. U may also have to remove the upper and lower control arms.

Parking brake on my 01 kia rio(standard) no longer holds


parking brakes are adjusted at and with the rear brakes,..(drum brakes that is),.....as you adjust the rear brakes to have a slight drag as you spin tire, the parking brake is adjusted at the same time,...they work together with that one adjuster,....as you pull on the parking brake, it makes the brake shoes spread apart just as they do when you push the brake peddle,..by adjusting the rears you'll also find that the brake peddle feels better too.

How do you adjust the rear brakes on a 05 kia spectra5 ? It has disc brake front and rear.


Disc brakes are not adjustable. You may have a parking brake that is like a mini- brake shoe in the middle of the rear rotor. Those are adjustable, but tough to get at, and they rust badly. Look to see if your "cable" goes either to an arm that actuates the shoes, or if it goes to the caliper. If it goes to the caliper, you have no parking brake shoes.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that when you park the car, you pull up the hand (park) brake, shift from drive straight to park and then take your foot off the foot brake and the car moves slightly as it transfers the weight of the car from the foot brakes to, in your case, the transmission rather than the park brake.
Most people do.

When you do this, you're usually putting the weight of the car onto a small lever engaging notches on the drive shaft in the transmission, not the hand brake. The hand brake's designed to hold the car, the lever isn't, it's there just-in-case.

  • To fix the problem, you'll probably have to get this part in your transmission replaced. Fortunately it's the least significant part of the transmission so don't let them shaft you just because it's part of an automatic transmission.

  • To fix what caused the problem, you need your hand brake / park brake adjusted at the handle. You'll probably find that it adjusts at the other end (inside the rear wheel hubs) whenever you reverse.

For what it's worth, to avoid doing this damage to automatic transmissions whenever I'm stuck in one, I shift to Neutral then take my foot off the foot brake, then the car moves as it's weight shifts from the foot brake to the park brake which I often haven't pulled hard enough. Only when, in neutral, the car is stationary without the foot brake do I put it in park.
In Australia, it became illegal a couple of years ago to not be in the driver's seat when the engine's running. My understanding is that this was because, when the engine's running, sometimes older Automatic transmissions damaged in this way can shift out of Park. This is believed to be what has happened when you see unoccupied cars reversing in circles on "wildest police video" programs on TV. I also heard of some Borg-Warner automatic transmissions fitted to 80s model Ford Falcons (common in Australia), 70s model German saloons, which were particularly prone to Park failing to hold the car on a slope. I drove one for many years in a '75 BMW 528 in which some of it's other drivers developed the same habit.
Similarly, in my own car, I don't take my foot off the clutch until I've taken it off the brake without the car moving. Though the local Road & Traffic Authority regulation states "First gear if you're facing uphill, Reverse if you're facing downhill" I do the opposite because whatever damage might be done to panels will be cheaper than what would be done to the engine if the hand brake failed and it's not going to make much difference in slowing down a rolling car, especially with this one.
