Shifter won't go into 1st or second.

my 2003 bmw 330xi was getting hard to get into 1st gear. when i would pull up the clutch pedel a little then it would slot in. now after # daty of finding the right position of the clutch...which is a pain in a master of a car.. nowi press clutch and don't feel like it is doing anything.my car is not with me now as last night had to take cab home cause could not get car to now shift into ant thing. is there a solution i could try without taking it in to shop. Any reply would be appreciated
