Question about 1985 Cadillac DeVille

(Battery No Charge Message)

I have a 1997 Deville that sat in storage for 15 months, the battery died and so I took it to Autozone to be tested and charged. The charged took and so I installed the battery back in my car and it worked fine for one day, the next day I drove to the store and all of a sudden my dash message board said (Battery No Charge) and the red battery light came on with a reading of 11.2 to 11.5 voltage. Then I read my manual and cleaned my grounds, checked the belt and pulley to make sure that wasn't the problem. Is it possible that the old battery damaged and ruined my alternator? Or should I just replace the old battery? Or both? Replacing the Alternator sure is expensive. Hoping its something minor,

Yep.... the tired old battery may have cooked the alternator. If your lucky , maybe it is just the belt. Could be loose wire , or dirty connection on back of alternator too.
Alternator should not be THAT expensive , and an 85 caddy should be easy to get at alternator.
If a mechanic has quoted you lots of $$$ , check with another mechanic. Stay away from chevy dealership , or any dealership for that matter. They waaaayyyy overcharge. If their book says it is a 2 hour job , thats what you pay for , even if it only took them 20 min.

Battery wony stayed charged

Check the alternator, with a multimeter, is pushing correct charge after cleaning all connections to battery and alternator. If the alternator is working properly, then your battery may be faulty, get it tested at a battery shop. The shop will test the battery under load to see where it is for crank power.

remove negative battery cable.hook up a test light between battery terminal and battery cablee you just removed.test light will come on bright.now start removing fuses one by one while watching the light, the fuse that kills the light supplies power to the. designated device. it tells you there is a draw in that circuit.

I keep having to jumpstart my 94 cadillac deville. I don't know if it is the battery or the alternator but it can't be the alternator because I replaced it.

Even though you replaced the alternator it could still not be putting out enough amperage to sufficiently charge your battery, Have it tested, AutoZone can test your battery for free.

your car will always have something being powered but its a trickle amount[computer-entry control[keyless entry]-radio memory-etc if ur going to let it sit for a month with battery connected yes your battery will more than likely be dead when u disconnect it ur also clearing all codes and memory in computer and components auto stores sell a trickle charger/maintain charge charger for long term storage there used for any type battery boats ,cars, atvs ,planes, etc the charger maintains the charge in a battery it goes on and off when needed

I had same problem and turned out my alternator plug kept falling out. ground was good but the plug with the clips was bent and kept falling out. had to make sure it was fixed by someone who knew what they were doing and had to take it to the dealer. charged me $75 to rewire anew plug on, took them one hour. have your battery and alternator tested at local Autozone or AAP
