Question about 1985 Cadillac DeVille
I have a 1997 Deville that sat in storage for 15 months, the battery died and so I took it to Autozone to be tested and charged. The charged took and so I installed the battery back in my car and it worked fine for one day, the next day I drove to the store and all of a sudden my dash message board said (Battery No Charge) and the red battery light came on with a reading of 11.2 to 11.5 voltage. Then I read my manual and cleaned my grounds, checked the belt and pulley to make sure that wasn't the problem. Is it possible that the old battery damaged and ruined my alternator? Or should I just replace the old battery? Or both? Replacing the Alternator sure is expensive. Hoping its something minor,
Yep.... the tired old battery may have cooked the alternator. If your lucky , maybe it is just the belt. Could be loose wire , or dirty connection on back of alternator too.
Alternator should not be THAT expensive , and an 85 caddy should be easy to get at alternator.
If a mechanic has quoted you lots of $$$ , check with another mechanic. Stay away from chevy dealership , or any dealership for that matter. They waaaayyyy overcharge. If their book says it is a 2 hour job , thats what you pay for , even if it only took them 20 min.
