How do you get the oil filter cap off to change the element?

Solution for "How do you get the oil filter cap off to change the element?" On a 2008 Scion XD, the service book says. Remove cap with SST (special service tool) and I went to the loacl dealer. They sent me to a retail parts store and they were no help. I would just like to change my oil, myself. Just so I can know the in's and the out's. It's my first car. Thanks, Mike Jacksonville, Florida

I'm not sure why everybody is going to the oil filter canister system. Doesn't make my job at work easier.
You'll need this tool here: TOY640
http://www.toolrage.com/prodview.asp?sku=ASM-TOY640
Any other tool will crack the cap and make life go bad after that.

Good luck, Mike.

CTA Manufacturing Corp part #2460 Oil Filter Wrench works as well, though the wrench handle took a couple heavy hits to break the canister cap free! Not sure where they are sold, but got mine at the Toyota dealer.

Can't solve the problem, but I have the same problem. I got a 65mm cap wrench to fit on the filter cover, tried pushing it with my foot -- no movement at all. Best part is that the 65mm cap wrench was tight, so to get it on the filter cap I tapped it lightly with the handle of my socket wrench. I mean very lightly. Oh, dang the cap wrench is stuck on there now, and I _still_ can't get the filter cap off!!

I also used a Unaversal filer plyers that close do to 62mm, scratched the cap a little but didnt hurt it. Once you get the tool above its all gravy.

How to find and clear a/c drain in 2008 Scion XD?

Install a cabin filter. You have to remove the glove box to access the filter's home, but once you do this, the filter will catch all the crud that cloggs the system. It is very easy to install the cabin filter in a Scion XD. Just go to Pep Boys or your local parts store and get the filter. They cost about $15.00 and check out the video on youtube.com "Scion Xd cabin filter".

Oil filter removal on scion xd

Go to DenLors Tools.com and order the "ASTTOY640" It's 29 dollars, but it fits like a glove and works well. Threads ARE NOT left-handed. Just take off counter clockwise.

Were do i find my oil filter on my 2008 scion xd

Scion XD's are of a choice few that uses a Drop in filter as opposed to screw on types.

The filter housing is on the passenger side of the oil pan. The filter housing unscrews counter clockwise. Just put an oil pan underneath to catch the little bit of oil that leaks out. Pull the filter element out of the cartridge housing. Put the new filter element into the housing, remove the old O-ring on the filter housing, replace the O-ring on the filter element housing that is provided with the "new" filter element. It's always a good idea to lightly coat that new O-ring with motor oil before putting it on the housing, providing a better seal. Then with the new O-ring and filter element installed in the filter housing, just screw it on clockwise. It's really not much different than the old style screw-on type filters. The only place, so far, that sells the Xd element that I am aware of is Toyota. They are about $6 a piece. On a difficulty scale of 1 -10, I would declare this a (1.5). (1) being a regular screw-on type filter, and (1.5) for the cartridge type filter on the Xd.

Were is the oil filter on my scion xd 2008

2008 Scion xD oil filter is a cartridge (element only) type. It is located under a heavy, black plastic cap right next to the oil drain plug. To remove the cap, you will need a Toyota "Special Service Tool" or an Assenmacher Specialty Tools "TOY640" or similar cap wrench. Toyota is the only source for the oil filter element; make sure you get a new o-ring (should be in the box with the filter element) and a new drain plug gasket.

I don't know for sure, but I'd imagine oil, oil filter, and air filter changes, tire rotation, brake and strut inspection, and maybe a cabin air filter change. Look in your owner's manual near the back - each service should be spelled out in there so you don't go in unprepared.
