The fill pipe is right back there. Check to see if a hose has been damaged. Check the spout area, is there a overflow pipe or a seam that could be leaking into the trunk?

When do you smell gas the strongest before the car is driven, in the morning, afternoon, etc.

The gas tank on the MX-5 is between the trunk and the top boot well. All the fuel lines run through the trunk area and it is possible that one of them may be nicked. It doesn't take much gas to smell up the small trunk space of an MX-5.

If you smell gas the strongest after the car has been run it could also be the return line from the fuel rail this would allow a smoke test to show the tank is fine but still have a gas smell in the trunk.

Check the 2002 forums on miata.net the guys over there have save my rear more than once in dealing with my 1990 Miata.

Sounds like a heat sensitive sensor--either the crankshaft or camshaft unit. Is the check engine light on? If so, rent a scanner, read any code(s), and pursue to repair(s).
