Question about Volkswagen Beetle

1 Answer

Starter Problems Have a 59 Beetle. Not very proficient with car repair. Replaced originaly starter moter last summer with a new one. Continue to have problems starting car. When turning over I get one of the following: very sluggish crank once or twice like battery can't complete the job, or what sounds like air but no turning over, or the air sound turning ing to maybe one crank. Or, if I'm lucky, it fires right up - but very rarely. Have had to recharge the battery several times because of the work trying to get car started. Did I install the starter incorrectly?

If it cranks at all than you probably installed the started correctly. You need to check and clean the terminal ends on the battery and at the starter. Turn on the head lights and try starting. If the head light get real dim or go out than you are losing conductivity somewhere.

Starter motor solenoid wont engage

There is condenser shaped part attched to the starter moter this is the part which makes the starter moter to spin and when it is stuck the moter does not spin you can check it by one person sitting in the car holding the key to start position and another one hit it softly with some spanner or something The starter moter will move there is a small gear in it which requires replace ment Or the other possible reason can be the carbon brushes in the starter moter are worn out or the place where these brushes touch on armature the place is worn out that Y ou will only come to know when you will take the moter away from the engine Lastly I hope you might have checked your battery that it is giving sufficient current to the moter

Wont start

Sounds the starter is no good (sometimes they'll work intermittently for a while before they totally **** out). Of course it could just be a starter wiring problem (sending wire).

Noise when cranking up

sounds like dust in the starter moter remove the starter and extend the starter pulling it out with a vice grips and pour4 a small bit of brake fuid on the shaft behind the stater gear(the brake fluid will not atract more dust)

try getting a new fly wheel installed in your car because it soulds like you have a few ground down spots on it. my buddies saturn had this problem with the starter and he had to change the flywheel and it has worked ever since and that was 2 years ago.

95 jeep cherokee not starting

Check the small wire on the starter to see if you are getting 12v there with the key turned. If you are, then it is possible that the starter (&or solenoid) that checked out good last year is not good now. If no power at small wire, then check neutral safety switch.

weather gets cold starter will draw more cold crank amps! battery must be able to provide so check battery for load test if stands up then I would replace that power sucking starter this is what they do before they quit on you in summer it is un- noticeable cold snap plays it out well good luck and this is the ideal place to start!!John/toronto canada

Checked starter--might be bad

Rebuilt starters aren't as well made as the OEMs... As a rule, they use inferior components (bearings, brushes, diodes) and are not as meticulously assembled, but the assembly line cranks 'em out in volume and by virtue of that abundant supply, they can be sold with lifetime warranties with out noticeably impacting profit margins. They know that the "lifeime" warranty lasts only as long as the documentation, and that research shows the average consumer had lost or misplaced their "proof" within 7 months. They don't make 'em like they used to!
