By your explanation it seems the valve timming is not correct and thts why it doesn't crank over!
Check and reset the valve timming.

How do I change the head gasket for a 2004 Hyundai Elantra?

You are going to need some more information. Head bolt torque for one. I would recommend a trip to a parts store to get a manual that will answer your question and help you with future repairs.

Car started to have white smoke. Crank is turning and cam is turning. No compressor. When turning over no compressor sound at all. Also water was in different locations under hood. I think maybe head...

Well, I think the white smoke if it smells sweet, is antifreeze leaking into a cylinder through a fractured or broken head gasket.

The head being cracked could cause this symptom, but usually it's the head gasket.
If it's leaking at the radiator, or a tube to it, then that could have caused an overheat condition that messed the engine's head gasket up.

Good luck on this repair.

Elantra prob

Could be as simple as a bad thermostat. These are inexpensive, and usually easy to replace. It could be a bad head gasket or cracked head.

Hyundai elantra 2002 over heated stopped running and cannot start up

The head gasket is probably bad. unplug the coil pack and remove the spark plugs and turn key to start, if its leaking coolant will shoot out of spark plug holes, seen it a lot.

How hard is it to replace a head gasket on an '04 Hyundai Elantra

depands on how mechanical your are . and you will need to send the head to a machine shop for need tools and a torque wrench and the specs for tighten the head back down .it can be done with patience and on rare cases you can lift the head to replace the gasket without taking everything apart
