Most likely problem is the crank sensor. they are bad about not wanting to work after they get hot, which explains why it works after a cool down. they usually won't set codes in that situation. but if you have a check engine light you should get it scanned first. auto zone will do it for free.

98 and 99 intrepid was manufactured with weak fuel pumps causing them to vapor lock try pouring cool water on the fuel rails on the intake to calm vapored gas then try to start it. Even the temp gauge at half way mark is probably still low on coolant causing engine to be warmer than normal causing the vapor lock to fix this problem replace the fuel pump with a 2000 or newer intrepid fuel pump that carries a little higher psi to prevent vapor lock from reoccurring this pump is compatible with your 98 it will plug right in

I have a 1997 Dodge Intrepid w/ 3.5L engine. Recently, when I would first start the car in the mornings, it would start and then die. As soon as I tried restarting it, it would start with no problems. Two...

I had the same problem with my 97 3.5l. I replaced the crankshaft sensor and the camshaft sensor and that fixed the problem. Both parts are inexpensive and easily replaced. The camshaft sensor is located on the top of the engine, to the left of the alternator. It is secured by one bolt. The crankshaft sensor is located on the bell housing for the transmission. You have to remove the air filter hose to access this sensor.
