Question about 2002 Dodge Neon

1 Answer

I was driving my 2002 dodge neon and I noticed that the acceleration was SERIOUSLY lagging. By the time I got home the problem had gotten so bad it took forever to hit 45. I got home and parked the car. This morning without first starting the car I changed my air filter thinking that might be the issue and when I went to start it the car tries to start but it won't catch.

It didn't make pinging noises. Does this change anything? god I hope so I love this car

Not more than a minute. Maybe 30-40 seconds which is still longer than usual. I don't know if it would have gone faster. The speed limit is 45 in gthe area where I noticed the lag. Just 10 minutes before that though it had been going a little a over 50 in a different area.

I checked the oil when I changed the air filter it wasnt low. I had decided to take a drive on some of the back roads around here. We drove maybe for an hour and half and the car was fine. We decided to head back and about 20 mins away from home I noticed it started to lag. I thought maybe the ac was pulling power so I turned it off. I pulled into a drive through and when I id the car shook really bad and almost died, when I made another turn it did the same thing. When I pulled out to get back on to the main road from the drive through is when I realized it REALLY wasn't accelerating. Got home parked it, next day changed the filter, now won't start.

UNFORTUNATELY IT SOUNDS LIKE YOUR ENGINE HAS SOME BAD CRANKSHAFT BEARINGS. IF THE ENGINE TOOK A LONG TIME TO GET UP TO 45 MPH THEN WOULDN'T START THE NEXT DAY, THIS COULD BE SPUN BEARINGS. DID THE ENGINE MAKE PINGING SOUNDS WHEN YOU WERE PRESSING ON THE GAS PEDAL, THEN YES, BAD BEARINGS ON THE CRANK. HOPE THIS ANSWERS YOUR QUESTION. THIS IS VERY EXPENSIVE TO FIX AND WOULD BE CHEAPER TO BUY A USED MOTOR TO REPLACE THIS ONE. BEST OF LUCK. KEEP ME POSTED PLEASE. THANK YOU FOR AN HONEST RATING AND FOR USING FIX-YA. AGAIN SORRY FOR THE BAD NEWS.

SOMETIMES, THEY DON'T MAKE LOUD NOISES. IT MAY MAKE A DIFFERENCE. HOW LONG WOULD YOU SAY IT TOOK TO GET UP TO 45 MPH? MORE THAN A MINUTE? WOULD IT GO ANY FASTER? IF NO THEN I STAND BY MY ORIGINAL DIAGNOSIS.

HAVE YOU CHECKED THE OIL LEVEL? WAS IT LOW? HOW MANY MILES ON THE CAR?

EXPLAIN THE EVENTS BEFORE THIS LOSS OF POWER.

HAVE YOU CHECKED THE AIR INDUCTION HOSE LEADING TO THE THROTTLE BODY FOR LOOSENESS OR CRACKS? I MAY HAVE JUMPED THE GUN ASSUMING THE BEARINGS SPUN. IT MAY BE AS SIMPLE AS A BAD THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR. CAN YOU HAVE THIS CHECKED AT A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP OR PERHAPS A MOBILE MECHANIC? PLEASE KEEP ME POSTED.

Look under the hood for a big vacuum leak. Usually a large hose on the intake manifold near the front pops off. A big vacuum leak can cause a high idle. Hope this helps.

Your cheapest venue to take is to change the fluid and filter in the tranny. Look at the small magnet in the pan and see if there are large amounts of metal fillings(small amounts are normal) try it after reassembly. Good luck, Dana

Car won't pick up speed on acceleration

You're not getting enough fuel. You should check your fuel pressure. If you have enough fuel pressure, your injectors are probably clogged up. Run a lot of fuel cleaner through your tank when you put gas in and see if it makes any difference. Lucas fuel treatment is the best to use.

the engine mounts and the transmission mounts are broken which causes vibration you can test this by slightly lifting the engine a little bit using a small floor jack but do not lift too much on the oil pan just enough to raise the engine a little and you will notice the vibration is gone if this is the case replace all the mounts.
