Question about 2001 Pontiac Sunfire

1998 GT shifts in all gears except 4th

Just replaced clutch, slave cylinder, pressure plate, car shifts well into all gears but 4th. Any ideas????
The car only has 85,000 miles and when we first bought it it shifted in all gears. Upon replacement of the clutch, the flywheel was cut .020" and properly shimmed. I believe its a mechanical issue inside the actual gearbox, but, maybe it has something to do with the cables?

If it is shifting fine through all gears but fourth then it is probably a syncronizer

I install new flywheel and clutch kit on my car. I can shift a gear when the car is off. If I start a car I can not shift a gear. What is wrong?

The clutch is not releasing properly for some reason.
A number of things can cause this. If, for example, the master cylinder is not bled properly, there will be air in the fluid and as a result, the slave cylinder will not have enough travel.
Another possibility is a bad pilot bearing, which is situated in the end of the crankshaft. It is also not impossible in some cases to install the clutch plate backwards, which will definitely cause problems.

My 1998 Honda civic ex won't move but the motor

Have you just replaced the clutch? Taken out the transaxle, and put it back in? Are you sure transmission was in good condition before this? If so, review your procedure carefully to be sure you got it all back right.
Watch the slave cylinder while someone depresses clutch. You should see the little plunger move slightly out and move the clutch lever back. The lever moves the release bearing inside bell housing into contact with the pressure plate. If slave cylinder doesn't move at all, try bleeding again. The plunger has to move when clutch is engaged.
I'm not sure what you mean by "will shift but won't go into gear". You mean it's actually going into a gear position and car won't move? Or it won't go into any gear, period. As if you had no clutch?

5 speed manual...wont go into gear when engine is on...but will go and stay in all gears when i turn off engine??? any help on this?

This may be one of two things, i have just repaired one with the same problem, the first thing may be the clutch slave cylinder, this is what pushes the clutch plate to release it or engege it, if this part is bad it will not disengage the clutch and will not let you shift, the one i just repaired had a bad pressure plate this is a part of the clutch and the clutch needs replacing, the best way to check is to locate the slave cylinder on the trany and watch it as someone presses the clutch pedal to floor the cylinder should push the fork all the way out if it does then the problem is the pressure plate and a clutch replacement is needed, if the fork is not pushed out enough then the problem is in the slave or the master for the slave, here are the parts to help you locte them, as far as the clutch and the plate they are located inside trany housing and cant be seen without pull trany, also make sure the clutch fluid is full, this is located near brake fluid resivor, and it also uses brake fluid, hope this helps.johnjohn2_62.jpgjohnjohn2_63.jpgjohnjohn2_64.jpg

SECTION 308-00: Manual Transmission/Transaxle and Clutch - General Information 1998 Contour/Mystique Workshop Manual DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION Manual Transaxle and Clutch Manual Transaxle and Clutch - General Information This section covers general procedures for diagnosis and testing the clutch system. For additional information, refer to Section 308-01 . For specified clutch system service procedures. For additional information, refer to Section 308-02 . For a complete description of the manual transaxle. For additional information, refer to Section 308-03 .
The clutch system includes:
  • Flywheel.
  • Clutch disc.
  • Clutch pressure plate.
  • Clutch master cylinder.
  • Clutch slave cylinder.
  • Clutch release fork.
  • Clutch release hub and bearing.
The clutch master cylinder transmits fluid pressure to the slave cylinder, which in turn moves the clutch release fork and the clutch release hub and bearing.
The clutch master cylinder uses brake fluid and shares a common reservoir with the brake master cylinder
The clutch is a single plate, dry-friction disc with a diaphragm-style spring clutch pressure plate. The clutch disc has a hub which is splined to the input shaft. The clutch disc has friction material where it contacts the flywheel and the clutch pressure plate. Torsion springs on the clutch disc help absorb the engine torque pulses. The clutch pressure plate applies pressure to the clutch disc, holding it tightly against the surface of the flywheel.
In the engaged position, the diaphragm spring holds the clutch pressure plate against the clutch disc, so that engine torque is transmitted to the input shaft. When the clutch pedal is depressed, the clutch release hub and bearing pushes the diaphragm spring center toward the flywheel. The diaphragm spring pivots at the fulcrum, relieving the load on the clutch pressure plate. Steel spring straps riveted to the clutch pressure plate cover pull the clutch pressure plate from the clutch disc, disengaging the engine torque from the transaxle and enabling the gears to be changed.

Inspection and Verification - MTX-75
The following checks should be carried out before repairing or replacing the transaxle:
Poor gear shifting
  1. Check the operation of the clutch: Lay a block of wood approx. 25 mm thick under the clutch pedal and depress the clutch pedal as far as the stop. If 1st or 2nd gear can be selected with no problem with the engine running and the parking brake applied, the clutch is OK. If the gear cannot be selected, repair the clutch.
  1. Check the selector mechanism:
    • The free play in the gearshift lever must be no more than 15 mm.
      • If the gearshift lever free play is too great, check the gearshift cables and replace them if necessary.
    • If the gearshift lever free play is OK, adjust the gearshift linkage. For additional information, refer to Section 308-06 .
  1. Check the transaxle fluid level and top up with Automatic Transmission Fluid ESD-M2C186-A if necessary.

Problems shifting, clutch feels fine.

Most likely the master cylinder. Both usually need replaced together. If one fails the other will most likely soon after. Then bleed system again.

I have an 1995 espace and the cluch pedel squiks when i release it and i have to crunch it into reverse and 4th whats this mean is it busted lol or can it be sorted out

Im having a job trying to under stand your clutch problem but will try...
If you are loosing either pressure or clutch fluid then the cylinders Master and Slave Cylinder have to be either repaired or replaced.. but if the clutch has good pressure but as you say crunch into Reverse gear it should also do it in 1 and 2sec gears but if only reverse and 4th gear then the 4th gear scrinco is no good and the clutch plate assy also has to be replaced at the same time as the gear box is out to be repaired.. its a big job .
So let me know how you get on ... Ron

Clutch problem

I guess the clutch system must be a hydraulic one, check the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder if they are functioning.
If they are thn theres a problem with the clutch pressure plate, if thts so , you will have to drop the gear box to replace it and its adviseable to replac e the pro-kit...consisting of Clutch pressure plate, clutch plate and release bearing.

When going throught the gears forward sometimes it takes more muscle to change particularly 3 to 4 or 4 to 5 ..... sometimes it is easy to change gear and sometimes it seems to take more effort ....kind of...

try double clutching(come out of 3rd then push clutch twice b-4 going to 4th. if this works your clutch slave may be weak or pressure plate is worn. Try shifting from 1st-3rd if engine revs like your in neutral replace clutch. when going 1st-3rd engine should catch and cause vehicle to buck&stumble. (check level of clutch master cylinder)
