Bottom bolt on the alternator is a 14. Top two are 12. You will most likely need a breaker bar to get the bottom bold lose. Be careful. I stripped my bottom bolt trying to replace my alternator.

There is a bolt on the bottom of the alt that holds it.
You should be able to use a 3/8" or 1/2" ratchet with a 12mm socket. (I only felt it, so I am guessing)
But 12mm seems to be a very common size for Scion and Toyota in general.

The bolt goes through two ears (or lobes) that are part of the engine block. The lobes are on either side of a "tunnel" that is part of the alt's housing. If it is too difficult, try shooting some penetrating oil into the back, where the threads are set into the lobe on the block.
Careful not to spray any into the alt itself.

My scion xb 2004 doesn't start!

it could be a billion things...might have to specify that is it doing...
if it doesn't start but cranks...then check the starter, battery, and the alternator...
it could also be the fuel pump isn't pumping fuel in to the you need to check that too...
Good Luck!

2004 scion xb bulb stuck

There is a black locking ring holding the bulb in. After disconnecting the electrical connector turn the lock ring approx. 45-90 degrees counter clockwise, remove the lock ring then pull out the bulb.

Can't get the pivot bolt on my '05 scion xb's alternator to break

undo the lock on the tensioner.for the other bolt, use what is known as a breaker bar, some oaf probably used an air gun to tighten the bolt, not a torque wrench. a breaker bar will give up to 300 lb feet of torque.

Need to install the 2 belts on 2005 scion xb.any special tools needed?

Should be pretty straight forward. I replaced the trans fluid back in Dec. and all I needed was metric wrenches and a bucket. You may want to try sites like and for other issues.
Just remember how the belts wrap around. Ya don't want to reverse the pulley on the alternator, etc.
Good luck

How do I install alt. belt on 2005 scion xb?

I just looked at my '04 xB. It looks very straight forward.
loosen the bolt that holds the alternator to the bracket.
carefully slide the alt to the bottom. (Also be aware of the plug and wires on the alt. They should never hold the weight of the alternator. You dont want them breaking prematurely.)
Pull the belt off, remove the belt from the crank shaft pulley.

Do the reverse, and you will have replaced the belt.

Make sure to check the belt in about a week or so.
New belts will stretch over time. Make sure you keep the tension tight enough to work correctly, but not so tight that the alernator shaft is warped.
I usually place the new belt on both pulleys and give a good "medium" pull on the alt while tightening. Find the middle of the belt and squeeze them together, depending on the type and length of the belt, there should be about 1/4" of flex on both sides.
