I have a 1987 Chevy G20 van that had a 350 put in. The crate motor paperwork states it was built in 92 with 93 specs. We put in a timing chain and the marks are at 12 and 12. New rotor, distributor cap, 1 fuel injector on passenger side, and distributor. Distributor was taken out to turn rotor toward #1. While it was on the compression stroke. What is the timing and do I have to disconnect a tan wire? Where would that be? Can't get the exhaust to stop glowing. Lady in distress.

- no it had a 305 and they put a 350 in it before I bought it. I noticed it after putting the timing chain in and test drove it with the dog house off. It appears under heavy acceleration. Had trouble getting it to start after putting timing chain on. It would not start at 6 and 12 marks. So I put it on 12 and 12 Then she started, but she backfired through the throttle body. While messing with the distributor the connector on the module broke off. So I then put a new distributor on. Some one told me it was running lean and I needed a fuel injector. That is when I put a new one of those on. I have a timing light and have it set at tdc by just moving the distributor. And when hand accelerated she still glows bright red.

- ok first it has throttle body not a carb. When I first put on the timing chain I did have it set at 6/12. She didn't start. Thought I did something wrong so I checked the old fashion way and got her to tdc with the rag popping out on compression. took all my work off and did it again. Still no start. worked with the distributor. even at 180 out did not start. Took chain off a 3rd time and set cam sprocket to 12. That's when she finally started and ran rough with all the popping through the throttle body. Now. She is running ok and has power. I drove her 20 miles to a shop for them to tell me she's running lean could be timing or injectors without them charging me 95 for the diag. check. Came home put in a new injector and played with the distributor to check how the motor sounds as to weather she would run smooth or spit. And also the veteran man at gm service said some of them are set at 12/12. I am trying to fix this myself. My book is not helping so I came here. I am about to let her sit till I can save money to take her to the shop. At least I got her running so I could without a tow. I just don't want her to burn up on me. She's not only my work vehicle but I use her as a camper also. Since the motor is only a 93 she should still have quite a few more mile to put on her. I will be out in the garage while it's raining again to see if I can figure out something else to do.

- well never heard of living in a certain state having anything to do with lean gas mixture. But I am in a southern state. I just finished with it. I had tried timing at 0 and at 8 so this time I set it to 4. She is doing ok now. I have the dog house back on and am ready to go camping next weekend for my late Mother's day. Thanks for trying to help me!
was this a direct rplace engine? why , how and when is this "glowing determined? Need to know.

- Wow, cherry up on no load.Sounds **** its running lean and too advanced. Poor power too? 4 to 8 degrees max at idle with advance assist disconnected. Retarded will cause overheating of coolant but not exhaust. Try this. Set timing static. Engine not running, set crank timing marks to 8 degrees btc # 1 cylynder up.Screw driver in #1 plug wire ghold close to ground. Rotat distributor opposite its normal rotation until spark is emitted across screwdriver to ground.. Spak is set to fire now at the crank mark setting.. repeat a couple of times to get it right on.secure distributor so it doesn't turn and plugwire back on plug. Fire up the engine. Set engine idle as low as possible without it dying. This keeps any centrifical advance from kicking in. now balance carb a/f screws by screwing out and backin each until you get best idle speed. Always keeping idle speed as low as possible with idol screw. When sarisfied you reached the point where further adjustment makes little or no differencem the las turn should always be inward to set the tension spring under the screws. Now set the idol at specs ( 600 to 650. Final chk the exhaust at tail pipe and see if the discharge is proportionate to runining engine. No wheezing or excessively low pressure. make sure all hoses and any advance assist lines are secure in place and no vacuum leaks. You can throttle up the engine to ck the manifolds but keep in mind that air to cool engine componants is affectected by doghouse cover. Make sure no spoilers or splash gaurds were left off on engine replacement. Good luck and feel free to go back and forth with me on this. If I recall right, a chevy timing mark alignmrnt is usually crank at 12 and cam at six.12/6. It Shouldn't run if I'm right and its at 12/12 now. We'll see huh? Confirm but never second guess yourself. Again, good luck.

- Can I ask where you are located? State?

- I'm glad you're good to go now. The question about the state was simple curiousiyt and had nothing to do with your problem. Sorry you mistook it.. happy trails

I have a 1989 Chevy 20 van with a 5.0. It starts fine, but dies right away. You have to keep pumping gas to keep it going. Could this be the fuel regulator,or maybe the diaphram?
