Freeze plug My 98 Malibu dumps water out, I know I already have a blown head gasket, but do I have a freeze plug?

Yes, I have water in the oil. It is a 3.1L V6. It is dumping out water on the front passenger area. The gasket is blown on the drivers side mainly.

  • jennifer_whi May 10, 2009

No I haven't tested the cooling system; I actually can see the water leaking out of the side of the gasket. I haven't driven it since I noticed the water in my oil.

A blown head gasket could result in an external coolant leak depending on where the gasket is blown out. Do you have the 3.1L v6 in it? Those engines are known to have problems with intake manifold gaskets. Why do you think your cylinder head gasket is blown? Water in the oil?

I'd be willing to bet the intake gaskets are blown, not the head gaskets. Have you pressure tested the cooling system to locate the source of the leak. Also obviously, don't run the car anymore with coolant in the oil.

Head gasket or lower intake gasket on 98 Blazer

this does sound like a head problem (hopefully just the gasket). pulling the head with the exhaust manifold attached is possible but tricky and difficult. risking the bolt and drilling it out if it snaps would be alot easier. I would strongly suggest having the head checked while its off (so you dont rebuild to find that you wasted time and money on a bad head)

Signs blown head gasket

Hi there:
Pay attention. here is the most common symptoms a Blown Head Gasket are:
- Your car is overheating. You know it's not the Fan or Thermostat.
- White Smoke is coming out of the tail-pipe and it smells like Anti-Freeze being cooked.
- The car won't start:
* You have already verified it's not an Ignition System problem because you have Spark coming out at all of the Spark Plug Wires.
* You know it's not a Lack of Fuel, because you have verified that the Fuel Pump is delivering Fuel to the Fuel Injectors.
- The Engine Oil is thick and tan to off-white color.

Hope this helps.

What are the resons of water found in oil sump?

Hi,

This is not a good sign, if the engine is running rough then you having a leaking head gasket. If the engine is runing fine then you could have water leaking through one of the head gasket oil ring seals or worst senario is you have a crack in the cylinder block and thats where your water is coming from.

Hope this helped.
Thanks

Jason

Water leak and water in oil

You are probably correct -- it's a blown head gasket.

How much is a new engine??

A blown head gasket will cause water to get in the oil. Check the spark plugs, if you see anti freeze on one of them, then I would say a cracked block.
