First, the starter is on the bottom of the engine toward the back and has a large wire from the battery attached to it. Second, if a mechanic said to hit it he is a pretty sorry mechanic who you should never let work on even your bicycle. Hitting a starter can damage it to the point it can't be rebuilt as it cracks the housing and wire loom assy inside. Sure, it might start a time or two like that but will cost you dearly in the long run.

Suzuki forenza wont start. headlights radio interior lights all work but car wont click or turn over at all

Batter's good if lights work. No clicking usually means the starter is bad. Unfortunately, it's a push it or two it to the mechanic.

Car wont start just clicks

Battery flat, charge or jump start. If not the battery sounds like the starter has packed in. the click is the starter solenoid. Try giving the starter a few hits with something solid, be careful not to hit the plastic end of the solenoid, if that does not work it's a new starter! Other reason, 'I hope not is a seized engine' Good luck

Car will not start sometimes

I would suspect you may have a defective ignition starter switch.

Car wont start, NOT battery

sometimes a rubber mallet doesn't work on the stater, you actually have to hit it with something stronger, like a hammer while turning it over. If not check to see if you have a pro lock on your vehicle because if that becomes just a little loose it won't start.

93 suburban..have had problems for a few months where the car wouldnt turn over.. then 30 mins later would start with no problem. The battery is good.

Your starter is Likely going bad, First check your battery connections and starter connections. When your checking starter connections, make sure you disconnect your negative terminal to avoid shorting the battery. If all of your connections are good(you must physically put a wrench on them and ensure that they are tight, removing and cleaning the connection would also be a good idea) then the starter itself is going bad. What is happening is that either the solenoid is going out, in which case you probably wont hear anything when you turn the key, or the starter moter itself is going bad, in which case you will probably hear a loud click when you turn the key, which typically means that the solenoid is engaging the starter, but the starter wont turn. The old school way to get it going was to hit it with something(like a hammer) Make sure that it is the starter your hitting. Usually after a couple good wacks, it will start working, however it is not always the case. If you get it started, autozone will test it for free. A rebuilt starter for your car is probably about a hundred bucks and you can do the work your self with little mechanical knowledge and a couple wrenches. Just be careful removing the starter motor, it is kinda heavy.

My husband got in his ford f150 1990 and went to turn the key and it was like there was nothing there. He figured He needed to replace ignition switch so he did that and still wont start. He put a new...

it could be the safety neutral switch (ignition switch located at the base of the steering column)..try putting it in neutral, reverse, drive then turn the key.could be a fuseable link blown thats connected to the battery cable, could be a starter solenoid, try jumping the solenoid with a screwdriver to see if the starter engages,if not then hit the starter with a hammer, either the bendix cover is rusted out(really typical with 1986-1991)and causing the starter to gum up with rust or oil or dirt so the bendix sticks down, the starter will not spin unless the bendix is up.,or the brushes are worn out and thats what hitting it with a hammer will do,loosen the brushes up enough to start working a little and then you will know if the starter really needs to be replaced.
