Thanks so much for the comments. I went to another mechanic in town and he said the same as you - needs an alignment and I need to rotate my tires every time I get my oil changed.

    Thanks again!

If you mechanic said it was " due to the light back end ", it can't be right.
Only 3 things can cause bad tire wear.
1. Over/under tire inflation
2. Shock/Strut worn out
3. Alignment is out

Two and Three would cause the "CHIP". I doubt they would design a car with a light back end because you can very easily loose control of the car in the rain. Basically called fishtailing.

It sounds like you have different size tires on the front than on the back causing the t-case to bind up. If not, your having an engagement/disengagement issue in the t-case or the shift actuator for the t-case

Do you happen to have plastic rim covers? An auto mechanic suggested that these can rub or oscillate in just the right way to make you think you have a permanent rock stuck in your tire treads. It drove me nuts! But sure enough, I removed the rim coves and there was no noise at all. I ended up putting the same ones back on again with double-sided tape (double layered) along the inside rim of the covers and this stopped the noise for some time. Alas, one winter later, I'm hearing noises again. I've pulled them off again this week, but with my black rims underneath, the van looks like some undercover cop car!

Would sooner think wheel bearing, should be able to hear the noise or feel play in the bearing if jacked up. Abs light on? often a bad bearing will get metal in the sensor and turn on the ABS light also.

My thoughts exactly. Could also be an alignment issue (rear). It could be as simple as poorly balanced tires. Take it to a trusted mechanic. BTW: Just passed 125K on my EX.

Tire wear

does the car make noise from the rear when you go at a high speed. If it does it may be your bearings. I had my bearing wear out on me at 15000 miles.
