Get the van jacked up and on a stand or blocking so that the wheel is clear of the ground. With the wheel off it may be easier to do with the brake caliper removed, two Allen bolts from the inside. If you take it off make sure you hang it up with a piece of wire or rope, don't let it hang from the brake hose. Look on the inside of the spindle and where it connects to the A arms you will see a large nut. This nut has to come off first. Once the nut is off you need to separate the spindle from the A arm. The prefered choice is a "pickle fork" from your auto parts store. Youwedge it between the A arm and the spindle and give it a few belts with a good hammer until the joint pops apart. If you don't have a pickle fork I have had reasonable success with a crow bar. It takes a few more whacks and can be hard on the knuckles if you aren't careful, but it works. In an extreme you can hit the spindle directly where it connects to the ball joint but you risk doing damage to other parts as well as the spindle itself. After you break the joint then undo the 3 bolts holding the ball joint on and throw it away. If it is riveted on you will have to cut or grind them off, a mini grinder does a fine job at this. Put it together in reverse of what you did. Make sure that you tighten the large nut that holds the spindle very tight, pretty much when you can't turn the wrench any more it's probably tight enough, but not before.. Only do one ball joint at a time, and you should probably get the front end lined up when you are finished.

How to Chang the lower ball joint on an (all wheel drive ) Chevy , 98 astro van? It's a bolt in ball joint not a press in .

Could be your has been replaced before.I do a lot of different vehicles, so bear with me. All joints are basically pressed into the spindle with the nut. Hammer on the spindle at the ball joint to get them to release. Some joints are bolted on, some are riveted on (grind, heat and beat them out) to the lower control arm some are pressed in. If yours is bolted on the lower control arm, remove the bolts. Knock the ball joint out of the control, replace it. Consider yourself lucky.

93 chevy g20 have speedometer cable

The speedometer cable should not have anything to do with changing the ball joint. it goes directly to the transmission on a 93. your grinding sounds like either someone didn't get the bearing back in the hub right or loose bolts on the wheel ..

How difficult is changing the upper ball joints on a Astro Van? I do have a modest mechanical knowledge and ability.

its not extremely hard. you will need a Pickle-Fork (Ball joint Seperator) Some ball joints are bolted in and some are Ring-Clamped in.

How do i change a lower ball joint to a awd astro 2000

you must remove all and all to the axle. Your lower ball joint is independant and needs to be completely removed to add a new hub assembly.

98 chevy astro front end vibrates and shakes at 65 mph

You may have to get your wheels re ballanced if you lost one of the weight's on the rim. The other thing to is a bent rim if you hit a large pot hole or crub and last to see if the tire it self has funny wear patterns on the treads.
Other things to look for if your wheels are ok. Check the ball joints Check the tie rod ends Check and pay attention to the Idler and Pitman arm. Your looking for any excessive movments
A good way is to grease all that is mentioned above and see if the vibration is gone.
Lost thing would be the brake rotors but you'ld now that by having vibrations throught out any speed when you apply the brakes to slow down.
Good luck and hope this helps, you should be able to do this on your own other then checking the wheel ballance.

have you check the wheels. to see if there balanced right. if you jack it up and grab the top and bottom of the wheel and shack it does it move. that will be bad ball joints..check your tie rods.
