The filter is after the sensor. If the filter is dirty, it should be replaced anyways. If the sensor is covered in dirt, than yes clean it first.
Lastly replace MAF

I need to know what the fixes are for P0101 code.

It appears to be a maf sensor code. With some makes and models, you can try cleaning the maf. Sometimes, with engine idling, you can tap on the maf, see if it effects the idle, if it does, then it is the maf sensor. You can also check maf sensor wiring circuits. If all else fails, you may have to replace the maf.
Are there any driveability issues, I'd imagine there would be? The maf sensor is usually located in the air intake, before the air filter.
What is year--make--model, it didn't post for some reason?

2001 eclispe gt smells of gas, engine codes p0101, p0107

P0101 is the MAF (mass air flow) sensor that measure the amount of air entering the engine. Not enough air means rich running and a possible cause of fuel smell. Apart from running a little rougher there aren't always many signs that something is wrong.
P0107 is the MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor and responds to changes in manifold inlet pressure (vacuum). Problems cause include hard to start, long cranking times, sputtering/missing, blowing black smoke, poor fuel economy.

P0103 OBD-II Trouble Code Technical Description Mass Air Flow (MAF) Circuit High Input What does that mean? Basically this means that there is a problem with the Mass Air Flow High (MAF) sensor or circuit. A more technical description would be that the MAF circuit had higher than expected voltage (air flow). Other MAF sensor circuit DTC trouble codes are P0100, P0101, P0102, and P0104. Symptoms You will likely not notice any serious drivability problems, although there may be symptoms such as a general decrease in power or sluggishness. Causes A code P0103 may mean that one or more of the following has happened: The MAF may be disconnected, or a wiring connection may be bad The MAF sensor may be damaged The vehicle computer may be faulty (very rare) Possible Solutions The simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back. Then start with the cheapest, easiest repair procedures: Verify that the Mass Air Flow Sensor wiring is connected properly and that there are no broken / frayed wires. Inspect for any air leaks near the MAF sensor. Take the MAF out and clean it using a spray cleaner such as brake cleaner or electrical contact cleaner. Be gentle with the sensor. Check the voltage of the MAF sensor (refer to a repair manual for vehicle specific information) Replace the MAF sensor. P0101

P0101: MAF or VAF A Circuit Range/Perf

- Dirty mass air flow sensor
- Dirty mass air filter
- Mass air flow sensor harness is open or shorted
- Mass air flow sensor electrical circuit poor connection
- Intake air leaks
- Faulty mass air flow sensor

Before replacing the mass air flow sensor, try replacing the air filter and cleaning the air flow sensor with low compress air or mass air flow sensor cleaner. Reset code and drive vehicle. If the code comes back, it may be necessary to replaced the mass air flow sensor.

P0101 code for check engine light.. possible solutions???

Diagnostic Test Code (DTC) P0101 has a generic description of "Mass or volume air flow circuit range/performance problem". This can be caused by several things including:
> Dirty air filter
> Air leak in air intake system
> Contaminated, deterriorated or damaged Mass Air Flow Sensor
> Poor electrical connections at the Engine Control Module, the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor or the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)
> Faulty MAF or TPS

You should check your air filter and air intake system visually and correct any obvious defects/leaks first.

If a visual inspection does not turn up the cause, then you will need a scan tool capable of reading sensor data to verify the function of the MAF and TPS. You will also need proper electrical diagnostic equipment to verify the integrity of the circuits and continue with diagnosis.

P0100 - Mass Air Flow (MAF) Circuit Malfunction

Basically this means that there is a problem with the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor or circuit. Other MAF sensor circuit DTC trouble codes are P0101, P0102, P0103, and P0104.

Symptoms:
You will likely not notice any serious drivability problems, although there may be symptoms such as a general decrease in power or sluggishness.

Causes: A code P0100 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
* The MAF may be disconnected, or a wiring connection may be bad
* The MAF sensor may be faulty

Possible Solutions: The simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back. Then start with the cheapest, easiest repair procedures:
* Verify that the Mass Air Flow Sensor wiring is connected properly and that there are no broken / frayed wires.
* Unplug and reconnect the MAF wiring harness
* Check the voltage of the MAF sensor (refer to a repair manual for vehicle specific information)
* Replace the MAF sensor

Then, like a reference guide check this TSB DTC P0102 MAF and this article about Mass Air Flow sensor, what does it do and how it does it.
Test, check it and keep us updated.

Diagnostic codes?

There are a couple of things that could be wrong.  First I would start by cleaning your Mass Air Flow sensor.  If you don't know where it is located it is just behind the air filter on the way to the throttle.  There will be a plug going into it.  The MAF could actually being going bad but it could also be a vaccum leak so check for those.  The last thing it could be is possibly your MAP sensor going bad and it thinks that the MAF is performing incorrectly.  Let me know if you have any other questions.  Thanks for rating my response and for using FixYa!

Can you help me decode these code #'s?

Hello mark...according to the manual for Volkswagen Engine and Transmission Codes...

P0101 Mass or volume air flow circuit performance problem

P3131 Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System Control Limit Exceeded

Dirt and carbon build up will cause this in some cases. You might try removing and cleaning the MAF sensor with an electrical contact cleaner first. You will still need to clear the error codes with VAG-COM and see if they return.

Good luck...i hope this helps.
