I have a 2005 toyota corolla with 44,000 miles the engine light just went on. I know it is time for an oil change, and the car sounds and drives fine, please help

Check that your gas cap is on tight (clicks). Take your car to an auto store and have them read the codes(usually free). They can tell you what the codes mean. You may only need a new oxygen sensor. I have a Mitsubishi that the light regularly turns on in the winter and off in the summer(196,000 miles). Gas mileage is stable. Your car is newer but a road trip may be all it needs to turn off the light.

Check engine light is on, but the car seems to be

The purpose of the check engine light is to inform the driver that the car's ECM has registered a problem. It then stores a code in it's memory that can then be "pulled" by a hand held diagnostic trouble code reader and usually the issue an be corrected. More times than not, the car will seem to be running fine even with the light on because the ECM will compensate for the problem as much as it can to keep the system functioning. One thing you can do is remove the gas cap and put it back on making sure that you securely tighten it until you hear 3 clicks. After driving the car for 30-50 miles, the light may go out. If it does then the gas cap was not tightened completely causing air to enter the system (the system utilizes vacuum so it must be sealed air tight). If the light stays on, take it to a Dealer or trusted mechanic for further inspection. ALWAYS BE SURE YOUR GAS CAP IS TIGHTLY SECURED AFTER EVERY FILL UP OR THE LIGHT WILL COME ON AGAIN>

Go to AutoZone or Advance Auto Parts and tell them the check engine light is on. They'll scan it for free (shops charge an hour or more) and will give you the codes. Click on my screenname to see my profile here, and look down the list to find my tips and tricks - I put information on this in there that will help you. Once you have the codes, post them here as a reply/comment and I can help you figure out the issue.

1998 corolla (canadian) "check" light just came on. Car runs fine. what might this mean and what should I do?

Hi:
The check engine light can be caused by hundreds of things, sometimes simple things, like a loose gas cap, so you need to get your car scanned to see what the cause is. Many auto parts stores will scan your car for free, and tell you what is possibly wrong, so try to find a shop to check it out for you

Engine check light on

My '06 Corolla's CHECK ENGINE light came on the other day and then went out after about a half hour. It was back on this morning and stayed on, and I noticed that the automatic transmission was shifting a bit more roughly than it ever had before. Took the car to a Toyota dealership immediately. The guy told me that Toyota has had an ongoing problem with the CHECK ENGINE light coming on due to a faulty CPU (car's computer "brain"). This has been affecting models from '05, '06, and '07 according to him. He said Toyota had extended the warranty for this particular part (i.e. the CPU) due to it being faulty. The warranty expires once you reach 80,000 miles, and my car has 87,000 miles on it (yes, I do drive that much for my job!). But the guy at the dealership was kind enough to put in a new CPU for free because I have been a good, loyal customer there. The CHECK ENGINE light is now off and it should stay that way.

Check engine light on

Did you use the correct plugs? When I mean "correct", did you buy them from a Toyota parts dept? Those engines are designed for a specific plug, and if you have the wrong ones in it, expect problems. many times I have had customer come in with poor driveability, and it turns out to be that they installed aftermarket plugs.
