Question about 1986 Mazda 323

Mazda 323 automatic

Our Mazda 323 Automatic (1986) does not (always) switch to the 3rd gear. Even not with 100 km.h (62 miles). When we put it into N with this speed and back to D, then it comes in> The reverse is even worse. When the engine is warm and you leave the car for a while it does not switch into the reverse. When we arrive, you are not sure that it will work and have to push back the car.
A.: is anyone known with this problem? It seems that appears often with this model. Total mileage 128.000 km / 80.000 miles.
B: is it possible to replace the automatic gearbox by an manual gearbox/clutch after the same engine? Will that fit?
The body is in excellent condition. So, why not?

Awaiting your suggesions,

Arie (NL)

Your transmission is cooked, no amount of service will help, these trannys were all junk. You could switch over to a five speed, but a donor scrap car would be the best way to go as you'll need all sorts of things to finish the job and a box with a picture on the cover always helps when completing a puzzle.

It sounds like you need to service the transmission, new filter and fluid should clear up this problem.

Mazda 323 1997 model Have no drive in all gears it is an automatic have changed oil and put cleaning fluid in also

It is a 1997 no doubt with 150000 or more miles on it. Auto Transmissions do not last forever and the internal components wear and malfunction (more so when maintenance is neglected as is usually the case) which requires the transmission to be changed or entirely rebuilt if you keep the same unit. That is what you are looking at here.

Most people today seem to have the most unrealistic expectations of the life of the mechanical components in their cars.

My mazda 323 familia automatic transmission is not changing gears.

Use a scanner to confirm whether you might have a fault on the automatic gearbox,or the gear box ecu is not working or the gear box is un serviceable and needs replacement.

if it is an automatic transmission then take it back to the rebuilder, however if it is a standard transmission it could be the clutch or flywheel

What is the o/d button on top of automatic gear stick for please

Over Drive..... Generally speaking, overdrive (OD) is the highest gear in the transmission. Overdrive allows the engine to operate at a lower rpm for a given road speed. This allows the vehicle to achieve better fuel efficiency, and often quieter operation on the highway. When it is switched on, an automatic transmission can shift into overdrive mode after a certain speed is reached (usually 70+ km/h [43+ mph] depending on the load). When it is off, the automatic transmission shifting is limited to the lower gears. For an automatic transmission, it is almost always best to select overdrive and allow the transmission to control engagement of the overdrive. (It may be necessary to switch it off if the vehicle is being operated in a mountainous area or when towing a trailer.) With a manual transmission, overdrive should usually be selected when the average speed is above 70 km/h (approx. 43 mph).

Does a mazda 323f 2001 model need gearbox oil change after some milage or is it a sealed unit?

Automatic and standard transmission needs fluid change every 24 months. On automatic transmissions, the gasket needs to be changed as well as the filter. On standard transmission there is a drain plug that can be loosened up, and refilled through the refill hole. Standard transmission use gear oil, while automatic transmission uses automatic transmission fluid.
