Question about 1985 Mercedes-Benz 190

2 Answers

I have a 1986 190D Mercedes-Benz, the problem i'am having is i have to keep my car over half full of fuel in order for it to start right away. If its less than half full of fuel my car won't start right away, the engine sounds like it wants to start. i have to keep turning the key on until it starts, i have burn out my starter twice because i let my fuel go down to less than half. I have change my outside fuel filter. and still i have to keep my car over half full to start right away. if i park my car up a hill, its even harder to start. Please tell me what to do. Thank you Dave

Check your fuel pump pressure. You can rent a fuel pressure gauge from autozone and check pressure coming from supply pump. I bet its weak. Hope this helps.

First, change your both of your fuel filters,
Second, you may even need to clean your tank.
Third, test your pump as other suggestion.

SOURCE: NO START BENZ 190D

Hello I'm an M.B. tech.. It sounds like the fuel strainer is clogged. It is a very common problem on M.B. diesel engines of that era. Diesel fuel develops algea inside the fuel tank and after a period of time it clos the strainer. The strainer is at the bottom of the fuel tank where the big fuel hose attatches to the tank. The hose unscrews frome the strainer and then the strainer unscrews from the tank. There is a filter on the strainer that can be cleaned and reinstalled. In the engine compartment there is a small primer pump that is by the fuel rack inline with the feed hose from the tank. If you turn the knob(clear or white plastic) on the pump it will retract allowing you to use it as a hand pump. If when attempting to retract hand pump it is sucked back down and will not stay retracted that means you have a restriction in the line- your fuel strainer is clogged is the most likley problem. replace both fuel filters during repair for best results. Good Luck

Mercedes engine w203 c220 stops when driving then starts again after fifteen minuites then is ok for over 100 miles of more fuel pipes are still full

There could be just simple debris swishing at bottom of fuel tank that occasionally gets sucked into fuel pump without actually getting in to the system, starving the fuel supply. When the engine is off, the pump stops sucking fuel and the debris is released and just floats away until next time. That may mean flushing out the tank to clear the flotsam.

This car has a pretty reliable inline 6 cyl. The car also has TWO fuel pumps .. if one pump is bad the car will not produce full power. this is to keep you from being stranded if you have a fuel pump failure. What you really need to do is check the fuel pressure and see if thats up to spec. Check your air filter too.. Do you have black smoke when you step on the gas? or just poor power. ?

engine wiring harness upper and lower could be degraded, coil could be bad, throttle positioner, fuel distributor could be bad and depending if its a half year car and you have an OVP that could be bad. Also after a full tune up have someone adjust the duty cycle.

change the fuel filter it maybe clogged, check for any vacuum leaks even at the intake manifolds
I would recommend trying STP fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank and make sure you have at least a half a tank of gas when adding and then finish filling it up and take the car out on the highway and drive it to run it through the fuel system and see if this helps and if it does then change the fuel filter

find the fuel pressure regulator ,pull vacume hose off,and see if gas is present or if it has a fuel smell. It is not supposed to leak fuel into the vacume
