2006 Equinox water leak coming from spare tire compartment

I have a 2006 Equinox with 37,000 miles and already having problems with water on spare tire running to the backseat carpet. The dealer, Frede Norman at Clear Lake tried to charge me $953 to put a sealant on the back door claiming is coming from the weatherstrip but it is only found on the spare tire compartment, wow, they think people are stupid to believe their mediocre response. I have extended warranty and they do not want to cover it. I am looking for a place to clean my carpet and find a solution to where the water is really coming from for a good price, I mean if the dealer pretends they have never heard of this issue, why is there so many complaints. If anyone ants to file suit against GM for this manufucture defect, count me in.

the spare tire is located behind the seat on the back of equinox, it is laying down inside, as i open the back hatch door there is carpet over it and pull up the carpet, hidden under is spare compartment, where water misteriosly got in. I took it to a through car wash place where they shampood and cleaned carpet, also detailed the outside, yet no water got in, even after Chevy dealership specialist told me it had a leak on the top of the weather strip, well I am telling you it must be coming from underneath, who knows, I am just hoping it doesn't rain anymore because that is probably when the water gets in through the spare. 2006 equinox dissapointment

I have same problem!!!! Noticed really bad musty smell in car recently - 2006 Equinox bought used last August. Assumed coming from carpet/floor mats but couldn't find source. After thoroughly cleaning car and spraying lots of air freshener/carpet cleaner smell would not go away. After reading online, checked spare tire well and found little puddle of water and the foam/pad that the spare tire lays on was sopping wet near the bottom. Had couple friends look too and couldn't find where leak was coming from! Took all out and washed again and let car air out for few days with all windows open etc. Had thought maybe winter snow/ice had just built up and eventually melted and started to smell with warmer weather. So, once all cleaned and dried out and smell gone....I checked this morning after heavy rain and it was wet again! Where is it coming from? Clearly a design flaw?! I have not had any accidents. Don't want smelly car!

Where is the spare located? And is it lying or standing?

I had the same problem. It is due to a leak in the weather stripping on the back gate. My dealer replaced that. Now, the front of the truck is getting soaked on the inside because the weather stripping around the doors are cracked. I am considering buying a car cover because I can't afford 1000 bucks for something so stupid. Never had this problem with any other Car or SUV.

Get in trunk with flashlight. Have someone who likes you to take a water hose and pour water over the trunk area and see if you can see where it is leaking. Then if your friend realey likes you they can let you out so you can fix or have fixed.

Tire compartment is full of water. The carpet in the trunk is not wet. it appears new and well kept. like the water is coming from below.

If you have a center brake light in the trunk lid. This is how the water gets in the well. I silicone all them. Sometimes the rear spoiler will let water in also. I also drill a hole in the bottom to drain the water. Sometimes there are plastic plugs you can pop out under the spare tire.

On my 2004 Infiniti G35 Coupe, the low tire pressure light come on after a few miles. The actual tire pressures are good.

The 5th tire is your spare. There is recorded case of the 5th (spare tire) is at low pressure.

Check your spare tire air pressure. Keep it between 33-36psi.

I am finding about 2-5 gallons of water in my spare tire compartment of my 2005 chevy equinox, I vacuum it out and within a week or two it returns. don't know how it's getting in? HELP!!!

Pending where you live, it may be condensation build up in the spare tire itself due to the heat inside the compartment...try taking the tire out for a time period and drive without a spare. That sounds risky yes...but it could be just the spare itself. In that case you'd just need to go out and purchase another spare and take the old one back to the dealer and tell them that something is wrong with the spare that you are giving them. If its not the tire...go to the dealer and have it looked at by a mechanic.
Hope this helps :)

Water in the trunk where the spare tire is...

It's most likely the weather stripping along the top of your trunk, where the hinges are. There is probably a bad contact, or missing the weather stripping.

pour a small amount of water down the back of the car, give it some time and then take a look inside maybe you will see where it's dripping from. if you can, fold your seats down and sit inside the car with a flashlight while someone else empties a glass of water approx. on your back window, roof of car etc.

Hope this helps :)

Water leaks in the back passenger side of 2007 Equinox.

The spare tire well is pooling water, check there. GM knows about it, but won't say it's a factory defect. Sorry, I'm in the same boat you are. See here: http://ww2.justanswer.com/uploads/Bluegorilla/2008-10-09_134337_08-08-057-001a.pdf

Water in spare tire compartment of trunk after heavy rain.

U need to carefully check the seams of the sheetmetal for any sign of water or dirt from the road, there is no common leak on these cars, in fact they seldom leak anywhere, the water is most likely splash up from the road, unless u left something out like it was sitting when this water accumulated. Let me know that info.

2006 Equinox water in spare compartment and wet backseat carpet!

I am going threw the same situation with the leaking water under the front dash and standing water in the carpeting causing mold..... also i had a leak in the back hatch causing standing water in the spare tire hold. Just took it to the dealership and its a sealant leak, apparently its common in 2006 Equinox's. Mine is costing $850 to fix the seals, but would be $2000 to do the seals and carpet. My partners' dad is going to replace my carpeting, but i am having the dealership fix the seal leaks.

Water in spare tire compartment

I ran into this same problem. I took my 2006 Equinox to a dealer and they found that the water was coming in where the wire harness for the hatch back goes in to meet with the rest of the car on the passenger side near the hinge. There was no sealant there. They put some sealant on and problem was solved. It might be a good idea to look here first.
