After driving about 5 miles on the freeway, the check engine light comes on in my 1993 Lexus 300 es. The temperature gauge seems to be working but the car smells a little hot after driving it.
The only way to check why the check engine light is on is to have autozone or a mechanic put a scanner on the car and read the engine codes. This will tell you exactly what is wrong. Many part stores will test it for free. Mechanics will charge about $40 But you will definately know exactly what the problem is.
If gauge is fine and car smells hot. It is probably due to plugged exhaust unless you have a wire laying on the exhaust manifold and it's melting.
