Question about Mercury Tracer
I need help with an automatic 97 Mercury Tracer Transmission? Yesterday it started leaking an insane amount of fluid from the clutch pack area(Where the tire rod enters the engine) the whole underneath of the engine it is wet with fluid. It starts up but when I put it in gear it acts like its in neutral, it will cost back before slipping in gear. It has absolutely no power to get up a hill, and occasionally while driving, it will slip out of gear and will not go back in until I put it in park (while moving, it just clicks) and then back into drive. Is it the transmission or clutch that needs fixed? Im not taking to a repair shop, its a junker and there many things wrong with it that they fix and make me pay for, I just need it running again
There's a good possibility it's a transmission issue. The clicking is indicative that the gears inside are not meshing. Only way its repairable is to drop the transmission and once there, rebuilding it would be the next course of action. A used tranny would be less expensive but not by much and you never really know what you're getting. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news and best of luck to you.
