Question about 1994 Chevrolet Suburban

Was running great, quit running when in gear or given gas

The rig was running perfect - battery is good, starter just replaced, oil good, gas level is 1/2 tank. It was idling (?) fine, then when we put in gear to take off it stopped - just stopped. It would start, but we had to feather the gas to keep it going. Wouldn't pick up speed - would die when we stopped feathering gas. Won't start - but battery and all else is fine. The exhaust was pretty strong the same day it stopped running.

It has 173892 miles, 4 wheel drive and the service engine light did come on after all of this started happening. Engine displacement??? OK - I admit, I'm a mom, my 16 year old and I are trying to do this ourselves.

Thanks so much! To replace the fuel tank do we need to drain and take out the entire gas tank? Someone told me to listen at the gas tank when I turn the key on. I didn't hear anything -- led them to believe it was indeed the pump.

was driving at about 35 mph, truck sputtered (like it was out of gas--but wasn't 1/4 tank) and died. I didn't have any problems with it (210000 miles, too!) and then "poof"! Our fuel filter and pump were replaced about 8 months ago--bad gas maybe?

Sounds like you need to have fuel pressure test and check for plugged fuel filter

Just a couple of questions before we start, what is you engine displacement, how many miles do you have on the vehicle, is it 2 or 4 wheel drive and is the service engine light on.
Let me know.

Sorry, engine displacement is engine size, ie... 5.7 liter, 4.8 liter and so on.

Chances are with the mileage you have the fuel pump may be bad, but before you consider checking or changing the pump, replace the fuel filter and try to start the engine.

The fuel filter is located near the fuel tank and forward. The filter is usually attached to the frame rail. Follow the large fuel line forward and you will see the small soup can sized filter.

If you feel you want to give it a try, let me know and we can go through the procedure.

I would appreciate a better rating than "thanks for trying" as I will be glad to guide you through the steps.

    Good luck in any case.

    Best regards,

Per your comment, when you turn the key to the run position, you can not here the fuel pump hum?

If that is the case, you will need to check the relay under the hood. When you turn the key to the run position, make sure the relay "clicks". Put your finger on the relay and make sure you can feel it click as there will be other relays coming on at the same time.

To find the fuse/relay center, open the hood and look for a shoe box sized black box, remove the cover and look at the bottom of the cover. You will see a diagram of the fuses and relays. Find the fuel pump relay and check it as I described above.

    Let me know.

    Regards,

My started decelerating andshut down.got to the side of the road would not crank over replaced the starter, battery, cables.now I turn the key and the engine turns an inch or two.Any idea

Did you get any caution lights (check gauges?) or did you notice if the oil pressure or water temperature were out of normal range before the engine quit running? With a new starter and battery and good cables, if the engine will hardly move, it sounds like the engine may be locked up. This can happen if the engine loses all lubrication (oil) or severely overheats. Check your dipstick and coolant levels. You may have to replace the engine.

Wont start. wont even crank.

Do you have power at the starter terminals ?
Could be something between the starter and the key switch such as the neutral safety switch.

your starter is grounded, replace it, it takes me half an hour to does it, been doing this 25 years, when a starter's bearing startes to fail, it grounds itself and messes the electric system. if you need to know how to do it yourself, just ask !

After trans warms up you put it in reverce it goes into gear and you give it gas and it starts pulling then it quites but when you let off the gas and the rpm dropes it goes back into gear

This sounds like you may be low on trany oil, start by checking the oil level in the trany, if its full then you may have internal problem and may need a rebuild. hope this is helpful.

I have a 1999 ram 2500 with a 360 gas engine 70,000 miles. Driving down road quit. Spark at coil none at plugs, pulled dist cap rotor NOT turning when we rolled engine over with starter. Pulled distributor...

Something has sheared. Is there a pin on the distributor drive gear, are the gears on the cam and dist. shaft perfect / no flat spots at all, is there a keyway or key on the crank or cam gears that has sheared? Must be a weak point that was slipping somewhere.

Transmission stuck in neutral (automatic) won't engage drive or reverse

first i would check the transmission oil, do this by starting the engine and leave it running, select all the gears (park, Reverse, neutral etc) then put it back to neutral, leave engine running then locate the transmission dipstick in the engine bay, remove and wipe the dipstick, replace then pull out again, if the oil is showing between the cold and hot marks then level is ok. I shoing lower or none, top up the oil level with automatic tansmission oil, keep rechecking the oil level as adding oil as to ensure it is not over full. will need to select all gears again before checking oil level again.
If the oil level is correct than quite likley a Transmission failure will require mechanic.

Engine will not start

Your battery is dead, that's why the starter is not starting the engine. Install a new battery or jump the car, if it still doesn't run, lpease repose problem with more details of the status.
