Evaporator Coil R & R

I am trying to replace an evaporator coil on a 2001 PT Cruiser. I started to disassemble the dash then realized the passenger air bag was behind the panel I was going to remove. I am looking for the safest way to remove the air bag so I can finish removing the dash. Thank you, Michael J. Czaja

Thank You! I can finally see the housing for the evaporator coil. In order to remove the evaporator core, does the steel dash frame have to be removed also? I have what I think are all the screws loose on the core housing except for I believe one in the back (up against the fire wall) I cannot get to. Any suggestions?

    Thanks again,

Disconnect the battery, if you haven't already, and wait a few minutes. From there just take your time and don't force anything. The airbag needs electrical power to deploy.

Bad evaporator coil

Its a big job, The heater box needs to come out, which entails discharging the AC, removing heater hoses, and hardware at the firewall. The complete dashboard needs to be removed and swung out of the way, steering column lowered , and heater box removed and disassembled for evap replacement ( simplified )

Access air conditioning coil on Hyundai Elantra

I assume you are referring to the evaporator coil. It should be underneath the dash up close to the firewall. Accessing it would require a considerable amount of disassembly of the heater/air conditioner components. This is not a do-it-yourself project.

Condenser appears to freeze up after running for awhile. After shutting down and thawing it runs fine again.

don't u mean the evaporator? the condensor is in front of the radiator, it get hot, anyway the problem is caused by a sticking AC evaporator expansion valve, this valve is at or near the inlet to the evaporator core in the dash.

How to replace ac evaporator coil

You need to discharge the system, remove the dash & if you don't know what you're doing don't do it. You need to drop the steering column & there's a special procedure to prevent damage to the clock spring for the air bag. If you get that far,you have to remove the entire heater box & completely disassemble it to replace the evaporator. Once re-assembled,you must recalibrate the blend door motors & properly recharge the system, another involved process. It takes 14hrs to do it in a shop,so you can imagine how long it will take for a novice,if you can do it.

Most likely a cam sensor or a crank sensor. The timing belt didn't break did it? They also have an issue with the timing belt tensioner going bad and jumping a tooth.
