My 2001 Pontiac Grand Am has the sound of a turn signal inside the dash. Sometimes it will happen randomly and then other times it will do it after I use the turn signal. But its starting to do it alot more frequently now so if somebody could help me out it would be great. Thank you.
You should take it into a dealer. There is a recall on the flasher unit for this particular vehicle. If it has already been replaced then it is the muti-function switch in the steering wheel. Very common problem with the Pontiac Grand Am.
First of all, you can change the turn signal switch yourself, just buy the part at a junkyard or Ebay. You need a TORX screwdriver and a pry bar. Loosen the two screws on the steering column cover and pull the halves apart. Next, loosen the main screw on the top of the turn signal assembly and lift it the steering column. IMPORTANT: Make sure to push the little pin in with a thin piece of metal before you install the switch. Good Luck.

Instead of a flasher relay, GM used a circuit in the flasher module.
I had the same problem. I found the solution on a Pontiac Grand Am forum. This was posted in 2006.."Many Grand Am's had a recall on the hazard switch causing the signal to stopworking. Next time it happens turn on then off your hazard lights and see if the turnsignals start working again. If so go to a local dealership and see if your car falls under that recall (free fix)." I ordered one on line for $12.00 or $15.00 ,PartsGeek I think.
Put it in and fixed my problem . Good luck.
look for the hazzard /4 ways switch. see if this is where this ticking is coming from. if so slowly move the turn signal switch . if it stops or changes, you have a bad turn signal switch. the hazzard and the turn signals operate through the hazzard switch..it has a built in relay.hope this was helpful
Sounds like the blinker relay. Is the emergency flasher switch on the dash above the radio ? If it is the blinkers relay is the same as the emergency relay. If the blinkers stop working pound on the emergency lights switch and if they start working then replace the emergency lights relay switch cause the blinkers is on the same relay as the emergency lights. My 2001 Grand Am does the same and I just hit the emergency lights switch and they start working again.
Common problem with Grand ams. Your blinkers are wired into the warning flasher relay. The warning flasher button is located on the center of the dash with a red triangle emblem on it. Behind that button in the dash is a relay that is about 5 inches long. It needs to be replaced. Good luck!
There are separate fuses for the turn signals and blinkers, but you should check both of them just to see if they're good.
You may have a burnt out turn signal bulb as well. I know that this sounds like an obvious answer, but a single bulb can sometimes disable the entire system because of the way that some flashers operate.
You could also have a defective turn signal/hazard light flasher. This is located under the dash board on the driver's side between the steering column and the door. You have to remove the sound insulation/kick panel (the cover on the bottom of the dash board) to reach the flasher (it is easy to remove - I don't think you even need tools).
There are 2 common things that cause this. 1. the hazzard flasher is faulty. the hazzard button and the turn signal flasher are all in one. Sometimes pushing the hazzard button in slightly will get the noise to happen, and is an indication it is faulty. 2. The turn signal switch in the steering column is bad. Turning the turn signal from left to right- very fast and harshly, will sometimes clear it up for awhile. Tech JK --------------
