Question about 2004 Kia Optima
My car has been running good. drove it about 200 miles yesterday. stopped and started the car with no problems while we were traveling, when i got to where i was going i turned the car off. when i started it again, it started but then died after a few seconds. That is the condition it is in right now. I start it, it runs for a few seconds then dies. if i keep the key turned when i started it will stay running, as soon as i let the key go back to its normal position the car dies. what could this be? also, if you think you know what it is, how complicated of a job is it? could there be an easy do iyt yourself solution.

I had the same problem, it was the thermostat.
HOWEVER - also check that the fans come on, that you've got plenty of antifreeze, no leaks, etc.
From the erratic nature of the overheat, it's likely the thermostat.
When you take the old thermostat out, check and see if (after running it under cold water) opens up in a pot of hot water. Mine wouldn't.

The battery is only use to start the car, once the car is moving the alternator takes over and charges the battery. I sounds like the alternator is bad. You take the alternator to Napa, Auto Zone or Advance auto part and have them check it for you.

Mine was doing this when I'd drive over bumpy roads. Noone could figure it out, till someone happened to check my battery cables. One of my battery cables was super loose and everytime I'd hit a bump, it would lose connection for a split second and shut the computer down, thus shutting off my Kia while driving.
Check the cables and make sure the cables are tight and the connections all look good.
