SOURCE: a knocking sound on my 98 vw passat engine and a ticking sound on the upper engine side - help

I fear the news is probably not good. Many Passats around 1998-2004 were badly affected by engine sludge even when oil changes were done regularly.

These noises usually mean that oil starvation has caused an engine bearing to fail, and also excessive wear in the camshaft area. If the sump is removed the sludge (if there) will be seen.

Testimonial: "thanx very much for the solution. the problem was with the oil dip stick rubber stopper, it was finished so the dip stick was going all the way down. there was actually about a litre and a half of oil in the engine but the dipstick was reading full, so i just flushed the engine and put new oil to the maximum level and all the sounds disappeared. What is the timing belt interval's on the amarok. The belt was changed at 105000 check at 120000,130000,135000 all by Volkswagen but failed at 143000 What can I do ??

You cannot do anything except have the belt changed again and then never buy another VW or any other vehicle that requires internal engine timing belts to be changed. These should be manufactured to last the life of the engine but they are often made to last until shortly after the new car warranty runs out.

Vw polo maintains engine revs when foot is off the accelerator.

You need to check the cable the runs from the gas pedal to the engine, it might be rusty and need some drops of penetrating oil at the point it meets with the engine accelerator valve.

it is your idler pulley. get it from dealer comes with bracket, just use pulley off bracket. take your belt off and your idler pulley is lower right hand side(facing your engine). 15mm bolt, replace pulley and reinstall your belt. it;s a common problem on trailblazers
