I fear the news is probably not good. Many Passats around 1998-2004 were badly affected by engine sludge even when oil changes were done regularly.
These noises usually mean that oil starvation has caused an engine bearing to fail, and also excessive wear in the camshaft area. If the sump is removed the sludge (if there) will be seen.

Testimonial: "thanx very much for the solution. the problem was with the oil dip stick rubber stopper, it was finished so the dip stick was going all the way down. there was actually about a litre and a half of oil in the engine but the dipstick was reading full, so i just flushed the engine and put new oil to the maximum level and all the sounds disappeared. "
