Question about 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Security maybe ?

My truck does fine iv had this problem once i had to tow it home and it started the next morning i think my security system is on my security light doesn't work so i cant tell but it disables my starter my gauges work my lights work everything works it just wont crank can someone please help me out with this problem its a 2001 with a 4.8 engine.

Do you have a spare Key ? The key is probably the most likely cause of your problem. Shorting the two main terminals of the starter motor will only make the starter spin, to engage the starter with th fly-wheel you need to short the main lead (usually the outer one) with the solenoid terminal (smaller terminal) However this will not energise th fuel solenoid etc that the security system also disables. You should have your key cloned at your local lock smith retailer before it fails all together. I am an auto-electrician and seen this many a time. good luck.

My truck did this after I replaced the fuel pump. Turned out to Fuel Pressure Regulator. It would crank and crank but never start. It's located underneath the black plastic manifold on the side of the injectors.

It sounds like a shorted class2 data line to me. Is the scanner giving you U-codes? (U1000, U1042, etc.) If you are getting U-codes that is your problem.

I think your security system has activated, and the car thinks you are "stealing it".
You will need to call your Ford or Mercury or Lincoln dealer to have your problem fixed.
They may suggest you have it towed to them.
Maybe not.

Andrew, simply shorting across the two large starter terminals makes the starter spin but does not pull the solenoid in that engages the starter pinion gear with the fly-wheel ring gear. The large cable that comes from the battery needs to be shorted to the small connector that is usually to the side of the solenoid block, that will then pull the pinion gear forward in to the ring gear then the starter spins, turning the engine. Your original problem could well be just the key.... Do you have a spare key to try ? Even if you do manage to get the engine to spin by the above method the fuel solenoid will also be disabled and the engine just will not fire up. I have come across many key failures in my time as an Auto Electrician. This is the single ellement of the security system that is likely to suffer from abuse (dropping them etc ) The key can be scanned at one of the many retailers with their scanning tool, they may be able to clone the key and make a spare (This is depnding on the make of your vehicle, which you have not stated) Othewise its a dealer you will have to visit and pay dearly for a new set of keys that will also need to be programmed by a tecnician. My advise to anyone who does not have a spare key these days is go and get it cloned before it malfunctions or you loose it.

My Jimmy is having a hard time starting, sometimes it dosen't.

Sounds like your problem might be with the VATS anti theft system. Does your truck have the chip in the key? If so you might just need the ignition lock cylinder changed out. There are 2 very small wires that run from the lock cylinder down the column and plug in under the dash. After time the wires insulation will get brittle and crack. The wires read the resistance of the diode chip that is in the key and send the signal to the VATS computer witch tells the ECM weather to send the signal to the fuel pump or not. On a cold moist morning the resistance signal can be interrupted or the resistance lever raised enough for the computer to get an improper signal. Your vehicle is thinking that an improper key is being used to try and start the vehicle. A replacement lock cylinder can be purchased for around $80 at your local part store and you will need to take your current key and the new cylinder to a lock smith to have the pins in the new cylinder changed to fit your current key. This way all of your current keys will still work the vehicle instead of having to pay $40 for each new key. Anyway, after you have the new cylinder working with you old key simply take it in to have it changed out, shouldn't take any competent mechanic with the right tools more than an hour to change out.

I have a 02 jeep grand cherokee laredo that will not start. It cranks like the battery is fine. I think it has something to do with the security system. It has a solid yellow key with a strike through on...

i have a dodge nitro that has a factory security, but you dont hear the engine crank.. try pressing lock twice on the key remote then unlock twice then turn the key.

Check the MAP sensor and the wire harness to the map sensor. Next time it will not start, try disconnecting the MAP sensor and see if it starts. IF it does then change the sensor. Good luck and hope this helps.

Check for fuel supply and spark availability to cylinders. Must have both that is a good starting point to determine fault.

Security system-passlock

I hav a 1995 88 w/ same problem. Key was worn out, Had Security system installing a resistor to by pass Sec. System.Had it done for $35.00 Check locally for a starter/alternator shop in your area.
