My 1983 jeep cj7 258 acid. won't start. It turns over but won't fire up. Wondering if leaving key on for 30 min without running might have messed up the distributer?

Could have messed up a lot. Check the coil, points, condenser, and choke pull-off if it's electric. Some auto chokes have an electric heater, check for that, too. I'd just get a new condenser and points.

SOURCE: car won"t start. starter turns. Happened once before. started after 30-45min.

I would start by banging the bottom of the gas tank while you are cranking it over. If this causes it to start, replace the fuel pump. If it still doesn't start, there is a valve on the fuel rail on the top of the engine (you may have to remove plastic cover). Remove the plastic cap on the valve, and while you have someone cycle the ignition to the run position from the off position, depress the center tab on the valve and see if gas comes out. If it doesn't, replace the fuel pump. If it does, let me know and I will help you further. (note: replace fuel filer at same time.)

The first thing that needs to happen is to determine which SYSTEM is causing the problem. Is it the FUEL system or is it the IGNITION system? The symptoms you are describing could be caused by either.

The easiest way to check the ignition system is to pull one of the spark plug wires and check for spark when the engine is refusing to start. If there is no spark, you will probably have to replace your distributor (Very common problem with Hondas).

If you can cycle the key ON, OFF, ON, OFF, ON, CRANK - and it starts right up, then you are most likely losing the pressure off of you injector rails during a hot soak (shutting the engine off when it is hot). This can be caused by a bad fuel pressure regulator or a faulty fuel pump check valve. This can be verified by performing fuel pressure tests.

hook up battery charger on low amp charge, turn key to run position and leave it on for 20-30 min. then turn key off, wait a few seconds, then attempt to start. if that dosent work, let me know.

it is in theft mode. you will need to turn the ignition to the run position and the theft light will blink. leave on for about 15 min. turn key off then turn back to run position without trying to start it. leave in run position fo another 15 min. turn off then try to start. should start

remove your radio, there will be 2 bolts to undo, switch will slide into dash, unplug harness turn key to remove cable, if ignition wont turn you may have to take ignition apart to remove cable. reinstall in reverse procedure. will need to relearn new key to be able to start. try to start, leave key in run position, theft/security light will be blinking. leave on for 15 min or light stops blinking, turn off turn back to run without trying to start. leave on for another 15 min. turn off then start

1996 jeep cherokee country i have fuel and spark engine turns over but still will not start.at one point i crank it for the longest time it started i warm it up then the next day it did the same thing...


When the jeep is cold, turn the key to the on position, without cranking the engine, to see if the check engine light is lit up, on the dashboard. If it is not lit up then the ecu is going bad, slowly dying. If no check engine light is on, leave the ignition turned to the on position for a while(may take up to 30 mins) and the check engine light should then come on and the jeep should start. If this turns out to be the problem with your jeep, then your ecu is in need of repair.

I just changed the battery in my 2000 chev


You need to reset the security system. Turn the key on. The security light should be flashing. Leave the key on for 11 minutes. The security light should stop flashing. Turn the key off. Turn the key on. Leave the key on for 11 min. again. Do the process a third time. It should start and run on the next key turn. ( also hook a battery charger to the truck while doing this 30 min. procedure. If the battery goes low at any time you will have to start over.)

Put new steering coloum in 01 sonoma ,now it won't start'it fires for second then just cranks


If you look at the dash you'll see the security light flashing, the new column contains a part that must be programed to the existing engine computer. Turn key on leave on for 10 min, turn key off, turn key on leave 10 min. Do this for a total of 3 times or 30 mins, and it will accept the new parts.
