Question about 2000 Hyundai Elantra

From cold start engine warms to quater temp then cuts out leave to cool then will restart and warm up to normal running temp and stays running well after that till next cold start any ideas? the car is a 2liter petrol hyundai trajet 2000 model

Does the Check Engine light come ON when this happens? Whenever the "Check Engine" light comes on, there is always a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) stored in the ECM (Engine Control Module). You'll need an OBDII (On-Board-Diagnostics) scanner to retrieve any codes recorded/set in ECM. Otherwise, guesswork. I have MANY ideas that could send you on a wild goose chase. I strongly suspect EMS (Engine Management System) sensor beginning to malfunction as it warms up. First strong suspicion is the crank position sensor (CKP) - however,usually always sets a DTC (i.e., P0335, P0336). The next suspicion is the Engine Coolant Temperature sensor. The ECM uses this sensor's signal to adjust fuel, timing, engine RPM, etc based on engine temp. If malfunctioning at a particuar point during engine warm up, it could be telling the ECM the temperature is LOWER or HIGHER than it ACTUALLY is, resulting in the ECM to increase fuel (flood it) or give it LESS fuel (starve it). If this malfunction lasts long enough, the ECM will usually set a DTC for that sensor circuit, either a Range/Performance code, or a "LOW Input" or "HIGH Input" code.

00 Ford Focus runs cold


Am sure you have a thermostat stuck open, i suggest replace it and make sure the aantifreeze is in the correct level.

Engine cuts out only when fully warmed up. Also, starts idling very rough when fully warmed up. Also after fully warmed up it will not restart until it cools down. Definitely temperature sensitive.


two things to check. First, check the EGR valve to see if it is sticking open. this valve is not activated until the engine is warm. This valve could also have a vacuum leak in its diaphragm so check the valve out thoroughly.

Second, there is an engine coolant temp (ECT) sensor that alerts the engine computer as to when the engine is warmed up. If this sensor is faulty and stuck in the full cold mode, it will tell the computer that the engine is cold even when it is fully warmed. The computer will then use the cold engine fuel schedule which is way too much fuel for a warm engine. The engine will run too rich and sputter. In this condition, the computer will schedule too much fuel for a warm start and the engine will flood. That is why you must wait for it too cool down and "match" the faulty sensor.

Note: the ECT has two wires going to it and is dedicated to informing the engine computer. It has nothing to do with the engine temp gauge on the dash board instrument panel. The sender for the dash gauge has only one wire. The two sensors are easily confused.

One possibility is that the engine coolant temperature sensor is faulty and is stuck in full cold mode. Lots of fuel is scheduled for cold starts, however, as the engine warms up, it needs less fuel. Too much fuel when warm and the engine floods out or riches out. The engine coolant temp sensor is telling the computer that the engine is ALWAYS cold even when it is warm. So, too much fuel is being sent once the engine is warm.

When the motor is cold and the outside temperature is below 70 the car will not stay running. Will die with in 30 seconds or so of starting, then you have to wait a minute or two befor the car will start...


Are there any service engine soon lights on associated with this problem?

Possible CTS (Coolant Temperature Sensor) or another sensor giving faulty data for the cool air temperature.

Check spark and gas delivery when cool, below 70 deg. If the spark is not being delivered or the fuel injectors are not delivering fuel at this temperature, it will explain why it doesn't run right until it is warmed up.

Ok, time for car school. The vehicle is operated by the computer, every electrical concept that is. When the engine is cold, it starts fine because the computer has placed it in "cold start mode", putting more fuel into the engine than normally would until Once the engine is warmed up, a temperature sending unit or temp sensor tells the computer to change to normal run mode. IF said temp sensor is faulty and is not telling the computer to make said change, it stays in cold start mode, still dumping excess fuel in the engine that is now not required, cause it's warmed up. Like keeping the choke closed on older vehicles. Now I think you can answer your own question, when this no start action is happening after warm up and it always starts fine when cold, what's the first thing you check ? Right, the unsuspected temp sensor. Change that and no more start problem. Have a wonderful day. Glad I could be of service.

Hi, have the same problem with my 1995 legacy gt twin turbo and the problem lyes with the ecu temp switch, it sound's like the ecu thinks the engine needs more fuel to start and run

Intermitant temperature


Check to make sure your thermostat works right by monitoring the warming up of your engine. With a completely cold engine, start and run the engine for a few minutes, then put your hand on the top radiator hose to monitor if and when it gets warm as the thermostat opens more and more and note the gauge reading( if it works) the top radiator hose should be unbearably hot within 5-8 minutes. If the therm. opens right it should close right aswell, staying open a little while eventhough the radiator may have cooled may be what you are experiencing causing the rapid cooling and is nothing to worry about. The Hose should not get warm very soon after starting the engine. Regarding you gauge, lets take one step at a time, verify proper op. or the therm.

Stalls when engne warms up


Your ECT (Engine Coolant Temp) sensor is bad. What's happening is at cold start it richens up the fuel mixture and as it warms up the ECM thinks it's still cold and essentially the "choke" is still on. Also check your coolant level. If you don't have enough coolant in you engine/radiator, the ECT doesn't know what to do so it thinks it's cold.

i had the same problem after spending $500.00 for toyota to look at it they didnt fix it and suggested i it was the auto trans and i should get it overhauled costing thousands. i didnt believe them and started to do some of my own research into the problem. the coolant temp sensor at the rear of the intake manifold tells the ecu when the engine is at correct operating temp then allows the auto trans shift into overdrive. to rule out any problems with the auto trans i disconnected the plug to the temp sensor and went for a drive when the engine was cold and it shifted straight away into overdrive no problems. you can't leave this disconnected because the engine is hard to start when cold as the temp sensor also tells the ecu that it is cold and allows the cold start injector to inject more fuel into the engine on cold start up.to overcome this i cut the wire to the sensor plug and installed a switch which i installed into the centre console.now i start the car flick the swith use overdrive then swith back to normal after car has warmed up . engine fault light appers on dash when switched on but doesnt matter. i have had this modification for 2 years now no problems.
