Remove the cable which connects your coil and the distributor from the distributor side. Have someone to crank your engine while holding the cable (use insulated pliers to hold the cable by insulated part). Maintain 1/2 inch distance from the engine surface where is some bare metal without paint. If there is the spark, then replace your distributor's cap and rotor. If there is no spark, replace coil and check your cap and rotor anyway, if they look worn and black inside, then replace them anyway. Note: before removing spark plug wires from distributor cap, mark wires and distributor!

The dist. shaft may be loose or worn. Pull the dist. out and check for binding, sloppy movement, worn parts.

Am not getting spark in my 1991 olds cutlass ciera. what could it be? for a week it would start sometimes, and the next time it won't start again. now it won't start at all. checked a plug...


have you checked the distributor cap and rotor because the spark has to come from these two things first and should be replaced when they get bad so please make sure when you check the distributor cap that you use a permanant black marker on the side of distributor cap and where it was placed at so you know the same place you took it off. If you take off the distributor cap and it shows the connections inside showing black on them that this is your problem and all distributors get bad because they become worned out by the rotor inside wear. If the distributor and cap are clean or do not have any black stuff on them that it could be the coil that went bad too so its a trouble shotting by looking at first the distributor cap and rotor. If you know how to use a multimeter and have one handy that you can check how much voltages is coming through the spark plug wires.

the distributor has a gear that runs off the canshaft. If the replacement one had a good gear match it with the old one. If worn the camshaft will need to be replaced for the machined gear that is on the camshaft is worn as well. That will cause a wobble. Also not if the distributor mounting area is not worn or egged out causing this to happen. It can be either or & possibly both

Element on distributor rotor keeps breaking off disabling the vehicle. How do you fix the problem?


It sounds as if the distributor shaft is moving, causing the rotor contact to collide with the distributor cap. With the cap off have someone turn the engine over and watch the rotor for a wobble. If there is a wobble either the bushings/bearings in the distributor housing are worn out or the shaft is bent or worn.

No spark when trying to start my 1992 Toyota Celica GT. The engine died while I was driving. It will crank over but won't start.


Remove the distributor cap and see if you see a rust colored dust inside. If so, the the distributor is bad and needs to be replaced. The igniter in the distributor is not working properly
