Timing diagram? Fire order? counter clock wise? 10 degreees? on Distributer where is number 1 located? TDC?

Firing order should be etched on manifold for cars prodiced by general motors it should go like this if u are looking at front of motor 1 2
3 4
5 6
7 8 its the same for 6 cyclinders follow wire from number 1 cyclinder to distrubutor to find out which wire is 1 on the distributor for TDC Top Dead Center pull spark plug from the 1 cyclinder get a wire hanger un fold stick it in the engine block then turn the crank pully until 1 piston is at top of cyclinder use hanger to measure be careful not to bend any valves

No 1 front left hand side ,engine rotates clockwise ,10ª might be too much for unleaded fuel 95octane i would go for 6/8 degrees unless you are putting in a lead substitute .firing order 153624

WHY WHILE I DRIVE IT LOOSES POWER OR BACKFIRES AND ENGINE CUTS OUT. AFTER A WHILE ENGINE STARTS AGAIN. BACK PART OF EXHAUST I HAD TO REPLACE BECAUSE OF THE BACKFIRE IT BLEW IT OPEN.

Spend a little money and by a book on the type of vehicle you own, a little reading goes along way when you are trusting someone who is willing to take your money obviously who ever is working on you car is just guessing. The first thing he or she should have known what will cause a back fire. I think I woul be asking for some money back for repairs.

Back firing is due to the ignition system is either to far advanced or to retarded. That is when the motor is running the firing sequence is out of order. Each motor requires fuel and spark to meet at the same time, when this does not happen their is a difference in timing thus causing it to explode causing a back fire.

The distributer is where 4, 6, or 8 wires come out of connected to the spark plugs.

Have you or somebody check the distributer and see if it loose. Depending on year and make of model, size of motor you will need the firing order and direction it is turning, clock wise or counter clockwise.

Depending on the year make and model the timing can be adjusted by turning the distributer timed with the marking on the harmonic balancer or by the computer.

When adjusting the distributer you will need to know the degre in which that motor is timed example 10 degrees top or below this is on a small metal plate that will be over the harmonic balance which will have a notch cut in it. With a timing light you can point it at the metal plate and while the car is running adjust the distributer clockwise or counter clockwise.


Hopefully you have not caused the timing chain to skip a gear sprocket or Strached the timing chain.

Note before you do anything crank piston # 1 to TDC Top Dead Center on compression stroke. That is when # 1 spark plug is removed and when the motor is cranked and your finger is placed to the # 1 cylinder is forced or blown back.

Once this is done check for the rotor under the cap is pointing to the # 1 wire.

A good mechanic should be able to adjust it by ear.

Ps. I hope that I have not offended any one with my comments it's just that I don't like it when somebody might be charging for guessing and replacing every and anything.

1995 Volvo 850 Shows the firing order as 1-2-4-5-3
The picture below is an extract from that document. The distributor is rotating clockwise.

I need plug wire diagram for a 1975 olds cutlass 455 eng.


I'm afraid I can't send you a diagram but I see nobody else has sent you one either. So here goes. Your odd numbered cylinders, 1-3-5-7 are on the driver's side front to back. Your even numbered cylinders, 2-4-6-8 are on the pasenger side front to back.
Your distributor cap should have 4 hold down screws placed at 2 o'clock, 5 o'clock, 8 o'clock and 11 o'clock. Your number 1 cylinder is the first plug tower toward the firewall (or behind) the 2 o'clock hold down screw.The distributor runs counter clockwise or backwards and the firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.
Your timing depends on which model you have. All models except Tornado are timed at 16 degrees before TDC. The Tornado is timed at 12 degrees. The timing also is set with the engine running at 1100 RPM not the traditional idle speed. Hope this helps.

I mixed the distributor cables up,so i need the order to correctly connect


If the wires are still in the distributer, AND, if you have a stock intake manifold, the firing order is on the manifold. If it's a V-8, the number 1, 3, 5, & 7 plugs are on the drivers side of the engine. The number 2, 4, 6, & 8 plugs are on the passenger side. The number 1 plug wire can be located by looking at the distributer from the front of the engine and visually looking between the distributer and the number 1 plug. Visualize the distributer as a clock. The number one position should be located between 4 and 5 o'clock and should have the longest wire of those on that side of the distributer.

If the wires have been pulled from the distributer, then, then, remove the rotor cap, turn the engine over slowly until the rotor is pointing to the number 1 plug. Using the firing order on the intake manifold, starting with number 1, replace the wires going clockwise around the distributer.

I took all the wires off on my gmc 1500 4x4 with a 350 in it and i cant get it set bak right i need a diagram


take the distributor cap off and remove the spark plug from #1 cylinder. put a piece of plastic bag slightly in the #1 cylinder wheny you turn the engine over just bump the starter and listen for the air and the plastic to start blowing out. now look at the position of the rotor that is where #1 cylinder wire goes.(make sure the piston is at the top or check the timing mark on the harmonic balancer it will be on the tdc 0 mark. look at the intake it will have the firing order on it. The ignition rotor turns clock wise that is the order that it fires the next wire on the distributor will go to the next number in the fire order cast
on the intake manifold turning clockwise.

I took off all the sprak plug wires and i don't


What engine? Why wouldn't you use a pen or sharpy to mark the wires with the cylinder number as you removed them. Next time make a schetch of the dist cap and put numbers on it. If you do not know the firing order make you own number system till you get that info. Of coarse do it before you remove stuff.Go into a dealership or local repair shop and get a tech off to the side to help you.

Distributer question


Your firing order is 1-3-4-2 Your engine cylinder from the passenger to driver's side is 4-3-2-1 Your distributor rotates counter clock wise and #1 is the first post.
Unfortunately Mitsubishi make provisions for checking and adjusting the ignition timing with the use of a scan tool. Most shops do have a scan tool that can be used to check and adjust the ignition timing. sorry friend
