Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

My 1996 ford f150 4.6L the truck runs great for 25 miles then the oil preasure starts to go up the engine will make a a thumping noise and stop running. Let it set for 25 to 30 minutes and it will start and run fine for 25 to 30 miles then the same thing again. I have replaced most of the sencers already. Have been told the oil pump is locking up when the preasure gets high. HELP

Never seen a oil pump lock up like that but,i tell you what if it is possible run a ground wire from your battery to your motor it could be with jumper wires and then rum if it does not turn off then your good. Also most fords have shorts in a wiring harness that goes around your wheel weld possibly that or the ones that go from your transmission on the firing wall and passes near the muffler.

have you checked the wiring from the relay for the fuel pump or the relay itself or does it turn off when you hit a bump,it could be your automatic shut down switch if equipped with one but i would deffenitely

try the ground test,it does not hurt, remember most problems are on cars is what you least expect

SOURCE: gauges say no pressure in engine 1995 vw golf

There are two pressure switches. One for oil pressure and one for a dirty oil filter. Are you sure you've changed the right switch. If car drives for 30 mls it doesn't sound like you need an engine. The spluttering is likely to be completely unrelated to the oil warning I suspect.

Cheers John

1996 Ford 300 six cylinder loses oil pressure when engine warms up

first you will have to say what the oil pressure is cold, idle and 2000 rpms and then hot idle and 2000 rpms before a decision to advise about a rebuild can be made
there are many reasons oil pressure can drop and not all require a rebuild

When my truck gets real hot the oil preasure guage starts bouncing when truck idles as soon as truck is put into park or is reved up a bit it stops bouncing

You may have a Faulty Oil Pressure Sender.
Here are some reason why your guage is bouncing:
  • Corrosion or faulty electrical connections
  • If the oil pressure gauge is pegged low after the engine is running, or is pegged high after the engine is running, or if there is intermittent illumination of an oil pressure indicator light, the sender could be faulty
You can find the oil sensor on the left hand side near the Oil Filter, as long as you don't hear your lifters ticking and making lots of noise. it's not your oil pump failing.
Good luck and hope this helps

Thumping in Transmision

Could easily be torque converter internal broken part. This is a common problem. I would check the transmission oil filter and the pan to see if there are any metal filings anywhere. If so, you need new trans and torque converter. Rick

Oil light comes on and beeps

Changing oil can't hurt. When was the last time you had it changes? How many miles on that engine?Changing approximately ever 3,000 miles is common practice. The engine oil light and the automatic transmission are two seperate problems.     Engine oil light come on because the sensor reads a low oil preasure. If the engine is not worn then the light can be caused by the sensor getting cloged up (from dirty oil ) and not reading the preasure correctly.
