Question about 2000 Audi A6

1 Answer

The low oil pressure indicator of my Audi A6 V6 car started displaying some 48hrs ago. I have been scared to drive the car since then in other not to get the engine damaged. The temperature rises but doesn't exceed 90oC. I have cleaned out the oil like I do every 40days. Changed the filter. Checked the sensors. Made sure the oil pressure switch isn't licking and still it comes on. With the three chimes.mWhat do I do? Is the oil pressure switch bad and in need of replacement? Everyone I have seen about it seems to suspect d Oill pressure switch because everything seems normal on the dashboard. Pls help me, I really love this car. Thanks!

I would agree sounds like a faulty switch, its a cheap part just change it. However why are you changing your oil every 40 day?? 10-12,000 miles is more than sufficient. Changing oil too often is actually bad for your engine!

SOURCE: "oil" displayed on start up

most cars have a self diagnosis proceedure during and just after startup. this is not a fault unless it appears while going round corners or just generally driving around. you have had the sense to check your levels and pressures then i wouldnt worry too much about it unless it stays on or is as i say on while driving.

SOURCE: Oil level and oil temperature are normal. Oil

Same here....I soon had the same problem after changing the oil..Found out after many tests and research that auto parts stores cross reference a lot of audi oil filters to the vw counterparts..Which do fit audi, but are shorter and lack the oil capacity to feed the engine. Then the pressure light pops on!!!! make sure the larger/longer oe type is installed. If your not sure buy it from audi its not much more than the napa brand.

There's a youtube video about checking Audi engine oil:

There's no mention of the orange plastic indicators but I would assume yes, they are the low and full indicators on the dipstick.

Hello Kemi1017,

Scared is good (unless you are independently wealthy).

It would be wonderful if your OIL SENSOR (pressure switch)
were suddenly bad... but that is not the way to BET YOUR MONEY.

More likely it is a problem with the OIL PUMP itself or
worse general wear condition of the engine (can't
even properly speculate without the year, mileage and
an operating history of the vehicle...
HELP us to help you: INCLUDE INFORMATION...
AUDI A6 spans decades... Quite a wonderful vehicle
(highly technical, diagnostics that predate industry
on-board diagnostic standards...
(See FACTORY specifications at bottom).

For my MONEY... (FREE services available)
I would look to the MANUFACTURERS TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS and WIRING DIAGRAMS available on BBB Industries website (see bottom, below)... REGISTRATION is required as these are REAL DOCUMENTS..

I would also attempt

Driving a vehicle without adequate oil pressure can
destroy the engine (easily).

If you are not into taking the ALARM seriously...
by all means keep shopping for an ALARM SWITCH
that will fail to tell you... "you are in serious trouble".

Hopefully the CLATTER of your engine will hold
your attention... until you properly address
your OIL PRESSURE PROBLEM.

TIMELY maintenance will hold down costs considerably.

Good luck.

Oil level problem with 2005 Audi A6 3.0 TDI Diesel Quattro

My 2005 A4 3.0 convertible audi is not a diesel, but I had a similar experience with a low oil signal going on and after checking the oil, which was sufficient, and replacing the dipstick, the light did not come back on until a subsequent trip. The light usualIy went on when I was close to the needing an oil change. I've had the car, a used one, for about two years, and the oil light minimum signal started behaving like yours early. About a week ago the oil pressure warning light came on. I don't know if there's a relationship, but if there is be careful. Audis of our vintage have a problem with sludge build up that damages the oil pump, which is a costly item. If you drive the car with low oil pressure you may seriously/fatally damage the car. I don't know if the sludge, if that's what you have, can be cleaned out, but I'd do it if it can be. My mechanic advised me to trade the car to a dealer rather than fix it. Hope you have better luck!

How low is my oil when the light comes on. My oil light did not come on until my car was completely empty of oil. Is that normal?

No, not normal at all! If your oil light comes on, stop driving before you ruin the engine! The light indicates not necessarily low oil, but lack of pressure. Either way, you need to get it fixed. If you add oil and the problem comes back soon, then you have other problems, like leaks, or a failing oil pump.

You're low on oil - the Audi dipstick isn't the most accurate thing out there. Add a quart and see what happens.

Audi A4 2.5 V6 TDI - Creamy grey coolant in expansion tank

Sounds like blown head gasket (or worse) still to me.
Remove oil filler cap and look for grey oil.
Never use water these days but special coolant. Water makes vapour spots and cause block cracks, worse then blown gaskets!!!
vapour does not cool very well.
Look like you have cracks already.
Take a compression test if possible. But might not show op at that temperature.
The gauge indication troubles me.
