Air bag replacement - Honda Accordian

If you've been in an accident that deployed your airbags, but left your car functional you no doubt have discovered the outrageous cost of airbag replacement. Getting replacements from a salvage yard and doing the replacement yourself is a relatively inexpensive alternative. I hope everyone is ok.

I worked at a wrecking yard where I pulled hundreds of airbags. I want you to understand, they can be dangerous if handled improperly.

Some warnings before you begin. Take these Seriously!!!
  • Alway wear safety glasses.
  • Control the environment - no kids, pets, people horsing around.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal. After you are done, make sure no one is inside the vehicle when you reconnect the battery. If your vehicle has an anti-theft system, you'll need to get your activation codes to reset your sound system.
  • Do not use solvents to clean your airbags. They may ignite if accidentally deployed. Use only a damp cloth.
  • Airbags are sensitive to heat in excess of 190 degrees F. Store them accordingly.
  • Airbags are sensitive to impact - handle them carefully
  • Airbags are sensitive to static electricity - ground yourself, Spray the seat and rug with fabric softener (anti-static - ever heard the term 'static cling')
  • Be safe
The procedures are pretty simple

Drivers Side:
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Loosen and remove the retaining screws from behind the steering wheel. Rotate the wheel as needed to access the screws. You may need to purchase new retaining screws in advance to install the new bag.
  • Return the wheel to the straight ahead position.
  • Lift the airbag assembly out and disconnect the wiring connector from the rear of the unit.
  • Unwrap the new airbag (carefully).
  • Connect the the wiring connector and seat the airbag into the steering wheel. Be sure the wire doesn't get pinched.
  • Install the new retaining screws and tighten them securely.
Passenger side:
  • Loosen and remove the passenger side dash retaining screws
  • Move it downward to release the retaining clips and remove.
  • Unscrew the airbag retaining screws along the edge of the airbag.
  • Move the airbag assembly downward the release it fom its mounting pegs.
  • Remove the airbag from the dash, disconnecting the wire as soon as you are able. I believe your model has mounting guides, if so save them.
  • If there were guides, place them back into the mounting frame.
  • Position the airbag over the mounting frame and reconnect the wiring connector.
  • Mount the new airbag, securely tighten the retaining screws.
  • Remount the dash and screw it back in.
  • Make sure nobody is in the car
  • Reconnect the battery.
All done

One more time, be serious, be careful, be safe.

I hope this helps
Mike

SRS light blinks 3 times

u will have to replace those vehicle impact sensors...remember some vehicles are different . never had to do it the past doesnt always mean its not the problem now...there is also more than those 2 front impact sensors in that vehicle..i know there are a couple inside the vehicle as well. under the front carpet and seats..the impact sensors inside the car are for ur side impact airbags and can be bad or reading deployed even if they didnt blow..good luck ...

Replace airbag on `92 honda accord

When an SRS cable reel assembly is removed and set aside during vehicle repairs, the cable reel may rotate inside the assembly so it is no longer centered. If the assembly is reinstalled with the reel off-center, the cable can break when the steering wheel is turned to full lock. The cable reel holding fixture locks the reel while the assembly is off the vehicle, keeping it centered for reinstallation.
CABLE REEL REMOVAL PROCEDURE
1. Follow the procedure in the appropriate service manual for disconnecting the battery, and removing the dashboard panels, steering column covers, airbag, and steering wheel.
^ Always install short connectors on the connectors for the driver's and passenger's (if so equipped) airbags.
^ Make sure the front wheels are pointed straight ahead before removing the steering wheel.
2. Verify that the cable reel is centered; the yellow gear tooth is lined up with the alignment mark on the cover. Install the cable reel holding fixture in the cable reel assembly as shown. Use a TORX T-10 wrench.
3. Disconnect the 6-P connector, then remove the cable reel assembly.
CABLE REEL INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Verify that the front wheels are still pointed straight ahead.
2. Reinstall the cable reel assembly, and reconnect the 6-P connector.
3. Remove the cable reel holding fixture.
4. Follow the service manual procedure for reinstallation of the steering wheel, airbag, steering column covers, and dashboard covers.
5. Verify SRS operation as described in the service manual. Road test the vehicle.
^ If the steering wheel spoke angle is not correct, change it by adjusting the tie rod ends. Do not remove and reposition the steering wheel.

SRS Light Came on After new Raio Installation

SRS i presume is the Supplemental Restraint System (airbags).Yes,it is possible the installer disturbed or pulled on some wires dislodging a connector, disabling an airbag,or something along those lines.A quality scan tool can access the air bag computer/controller and pull diagnostic trouble codes. The codes will tell you exactly what is malfunctioning, driver side, passenger side,etc..Then the diagnsotic route can be followed to make necessary repairs. If the SRS wasn't on before the repairs,i would go back to the store that installed the stereo and insist this light wasn't on before the repairs.Where i work, before EVER laying hands on the vehicle for repairs, any and all lights illuminated on the dash are documented on the repair order,as well as many other vehicle functions or damage.Scrapes, dents, missing hub caps,a/c functioning or not...many many things are documented before repairs begin.

SRS Light came on after New Radio INstallation

he could have tapped into the power line for the airbag system or loosened the wire during the installation. if you went to a professional, take it back to him/her. but, on the off chance that it is a cowinkidink have it checked by someone that can access the airbag system. body shops are good for that purpose because they see that type of work from accident cases.
