If it doesn't do this when operating at regular intervals, I wouldn't be overly concerned. White smoke is normal for cold diesels, as long as it is only at start up and stops when warmed up. You may have a pump starting to lose its prime though. That would account for having to turn it over a few times after it has sat for a while.
Hello Sandra, my name is Andres and i willhelp you with your problem and to start with i need you to check fisicly the terminals of your battery i know is a little hidden but try to see if there is not corrosion on the terminals, if yo clean and test the battery, if that is not your case do you have the ckeck engine light on ? make sure if you do to take it to the closes autoparts for a free OBD2 SCAN and see if you have a crank shaft position sensor or camshaftposition sensor,again if that is not your case check your starter for false contact of defective starter
