Had the same problem in my Dodge Dakota recently. It seems that the hose from the white fill bottle on the brake system had become clogged and even though there appeared to be plenty of brake fluid in there, there was almost none in the master cylinder. Check the level in the master cylinder. Worked for me and the ABS light reset after a couple of days, likely would have reset sooner if i bled the brakes but I just let the bubbles work out on their own...bad idea but it was cold and rainy.

Sounds like vacuum booster diaphram rupture, if pedal is stiff.slow release at abs valve body indicates excessive air in system, preesure bleed all components and valve body ports. chris

If the brakes seem to take a while to release, check your hydraulic fluid and make sure it is topped off. Also, when was the last time your brakes were changed? Regardless of this date, you could always go to autozone and they will pull your computer codes for free, at which point you could decide what road to take. Hope this helps.

2009 Dodge Caliber - The ABS & Brake Light came on as well as the feeling/sensation of the brake being applied very hard for a split second.

take it to an accredited brake specialist shop
I suspect that the brake booster is becoming defective and the small application to the pedal causes excessive booster reaction
the abs section only maintains applied brake fluid pressure as set by the position of the pedal
that is to maintain the pressure as the stopping and start movement of a skidding wheel opens and closes a valve to that wheel /s
if you are on ice that sudden hard braking will cause the wheels to lock and immediately the abs cuts in to allow the wheels to turn and then to allow brake action to be reapplied
if the abs is working under brakes you will get a pulsating feeling under your foot as the fluid pressure is alternation between full on and released by the abs valves

Dash warning light

Do you mean the ABS and BRAKE lights? If so, the ABS module is bad which causes both lights to come on. After rebooting, the module gets tested and the ABS light will come on after a few seconds. If it a module problem the BRAKE light will also come on. The brakes will work normally, but will not provide the anti-lock feature.
