Try using a genuine filter as some after market filters do not have an anti-drain valve in the unit. It means that the oil in the engine galleys is allowed to drain back to the sump and it takes time to fill up before pressure is reached.

SOURCE: OIL PRESSUE LOW

At some point, your engine is registering low oil pressure and warning you the oil pressure is insufficient to lubricate the engine properly.

How does the engine know this? What causes it? Excellent questions. The engine 'knows' this because there is one or more sensors that read the oil pressure all the time. The sensors report to the computer which reports to you. They could be faulty. On the other hand, there could be times when oil pressure IS low. Your oil pump may be mal-functioning. Normally, I would expect the oil pump to either do its job properly or NOT do it properly but not act intermittently. It may warrant being checked by a professional. Another reason for this condition could be the oil itself, though you report you just had it changed. Presumably, whom ever did the change put in the proper oil grade, service and weight, recommended by GM.

Another thought, is this warning seen by you immediately after you start the car? If yes, it is normal for oil to take a second or two to build the proper pressure, particularly in cold weather. Where I am at, it is cold. Oil doesn't like to move when it is cold (like me) so it takes a bit of time to get up pressure (like me).

If this continues, you may want to have this problem looked at by a professional, as I said.

SOURCE: failure to stay running

First you need to hook up a OBD II scanner to your car to find the Trouble Code for it, so a Mechanic or you can properly diagnose your car, so it can be repaired properly the first time around. You can go to any AutoZone and they can scan your car at no charge.

SOURCE: low oil light comes on , is it low oil pressure or

It could be a number of things. easiest, low oil volume. A faulty pressure sensor, or just engine wear. Oil pressure is generated in the engine main bearings. The oil pump distributes oil through the engine (otherwise it would all just sit in the oil pan). If the main crank engines are worn the vehicle will begin to experience problems such as this and ultimately...failure. It's been my experience that a quality engine protectant such as "Lucas" oil stabilizer, Tuff Oil, or Slick 50 (the latter two protect and coat the engine with PTFE and/or Teflon) Buying time and extending the engine life of the vehicle. I'd check the oil level, and then check the oil pressure sensor and add a protectant before removing the pan to check the main bearings or pump. I hope I've helped. If so please rate my assistance and leave a testimonial.

2002 volvo V40 wagon oil light stays on and engine is very loud

Don't drive your car!
If by 'loud' you mean there's knocks and rumbles - that sounds like serious damage caused by zero or low oil pressure. If there's no terminal damage yet caused by a lack of oil pressure .. there soon will be.

Don't drive your car. Get somebody qualified to have a look at it first. Your oil pressure warning light is on because there's no oil pressure. You're liable to destroy the engine (very quickly) if you run it with no oil pressure.

The first thing you should do is check your engine oil level. Make sure that the oil level reaches 'full' on the dipstick.

If your oil level has been unacceptably low - top up and start the engine. The oil warning light should go out within a couple of seconds. If not - it points at a problem elsewhere. Don't run your engine with the oil light on. Get a second opinion.

Why would the oil light stay on?

That depends on the type of oil warning light being displayed. There are 2 types of warning lights

1. Low oil pressure light which all cars have
2. low oil level light which some cars have.

Low OIL PRESSURE warning means the oil pressure is below minimum and when this happens there will be insufficient lubrication of many engine parts because sufficient oil cannot get to all parts of the engine it is required to lubricate. Until the cause is identified and rectified the warning light will remain. If you run your engine with low oil pressure you will cause expensive damage to internal engine components.

Low OIL LEVEL warning means the oil in the sump has dropped to a dangerously low level (which may be due to an oil leak or abnormal oil consumption by the engine.) This warning means the oil level needs to be topped up and the warning will stay displayed until you top up the oil. Running the engine with low oil will cause expensive engine damage.
Since it is a 2 minute job, Oil levels should be checked fortnightly as a minimum, together with radiator coolant and power steering fluid levels, if you run the car most days each week as most people do.

It is possible for a warning light to remain displayed when the cause has been dealt with because there is a problem with the sender unit. However it needs to be established with alternative checks that the problem has been fixed before investigating if there is a problem with the warning light itself.

Why does the Change Oil light stay on 15 seconds after starting car?

Try re-setting the oil change light and see if it quits. Should re-set itself. Not oil sending unit, that tells computer and light when there is a problem like no oil pressure.

What causes low oil pressure in my pontiac sv6 2007

If the low pressure is on start up then the time taken is when the oil pressure is building up to fill the oil galleys ,hydraulic tappets and oil filter. If you have used a cheap filter without a drain back valve or the wrong viscosity oil that will add to the time it takes for the light to go off.

Sounds like your discribing the oil light. Does it look like this?

best_try_18.jpg
If this is it check you oil level if it low add some. Also if it has been a while like over 3,000 miles you would be better of to have the oil changed.
Running engine low or out of oil will cause servier engine damage so don't wait.
