2005 Mustang Convertible not going up

I Have a 2005 Mustang convertible and the top went down with no problems and when I went to put it back up, it will not work. i can not hear the motor powering on and i checked all the fuses and they seem to be fine. my driver rear window regulator is broken on order and now the motor for the rear is grinding constantly without stopping, what is wrong?

i tried and it did not help. The only response i get is a grinding sound from the driver rear window which is stuck up with a new regulator on order. The vehicle was left in park and is the top is not going back up.

    where is the interlock switch?

  • gerry bissi May 11, 2010

check the interlock switch. It has to be in park to operate. Check the relay too.

This is for a 2003 using the parking brake as an interlock, but 2005 uses the the shifter to control the top not being operated while the car is in motion.

    Principles of Operation

The convertible top will only operate with the parking brake engaged and the ignition switch in the RUN position. When the parking brake is engaged, the raise and lower relay coils are grounded through the parking brake switch. The convertible top switch supplies power to the raise or lower relay coil when raise or lower is selected. This power energizes the coil causing the relay contacts to close which supplies battery power to the convertible top motor/pump assembly. The normal state of the relay is connected to ground. When the raise or lower relay is operating, the other relay remains in its normal state supplying the motor/pump ground.

SOURCE: Convertible top won't close

Hi, same problem here. I've take it to VW twice for this issue, just before the warranty expired, then just after it expired it happened again. Taking it in on friday, its very frustrating, i've had the hydraulic pump replaced and several micro-switches.

SOURCE: right rear window will not go up 2005 VW bug

Can you hear the motor whirring when the switch is activated? VW makes the bracket that holds the window out of plastic. You cannot buy a replacement bracket, so most likely the window regulator is broken and it needs to be replaced.

If you do not hear the motor, then the switch could be bad, or agin the regulator may need to be replaced. It's expensive to fix VW windows.

SOURCE: convertible top won't go back up, can you help?

IT is probably a fuse. Does it work at all? my mustang had a busted cylinder and only 1 side would go up. If it doesnt work at all then check your fuses. With no manual you will have to use a flashlight and shine on them and see if one is blown. IF they all look good then I would go buy a testlight for about $10 and manually check the fuses for power. It oculd be the motor, however that will cost you several hundred dollars and that is if you install it yourself.

83 mustang convertible top won't go up or down/what's the problem?

There could be several causes - rusty or dirty flex joints ( the point where the metal arms contact each other ) or either bad contacts in the motor or a bad motor. Using a multimeter to test resistance would be my first step after lubricating all of the flex joints. You didn't mention if you can hear the electric motor working while trying to move the top - if not, then you may have found the culprit. that motor could be worn out - or at least in need of a rebuild !I'm not sure where that motor is located on a beemer, but calling a local friendly shop may guide you in the right direction. It IS 31 years old - and time is not nice to electronics!!
Hope this helps!!

Rag top / convertible top motor/pump won't work. Needs fluid or motor?

most soft tops are operated with an electric wiper motor could be just a rust problem, check behind the seat or in the boot of the car, these are normally behind a panel, a little Q20 should sort it out

Convertible top is acting sluggish and unresponsive.

You are probably low on fluid.
Behind the rear seat is your motor/pump/reservoir combination.
With the top down, fill the reservoir to overflowing with ATF.
Cycle the system a few times and repeat.
Do this till the reservoir will take no more fluid.
Check the lines and cylinders for leaks. The fluid must be going somewhere.
If you replace any lines or cylinders, always do them in pairs.

Putting together the 3 bows for convertible top

Do yourself and your Mustang convertible a favor. Have the top professionally installed. The bows are position sensitive and require adjustment so the top fabric is stretched just right. I had a 66 drop top that needed just fabric and I still paid a pro to do it.
