The power brake booster has a bad valve. I can't suggest where to find a new valve for it, but you can buy a rebuilt replacement. They are usually not hard to put on.

SOURCE: I have a 2001 Ford Escape w/ loss in fuel economy

you will have to take it to the dealer and have them plug it in the computer to see what code it spit out that way they can narrow it down the problems; it can get expensive by replacing parts and hopping it will rectified the issue. The service engine light telling computer the engine is not running properly and needing attention. any time service engine light come on it will have some impact on your gas mileage and some performance however it may not have any effect to your engine running. keep in mind computer only program to sense the engine running at 100% optimum and anything less the computer will trigger the service engine light. it will cost somewhere around 75-80 bucks to have them run the test, trust me its worth every penny if you calculate the loss of your mileage over time by doing nothing or keep replacing part that need not to be replace.

I can hear a hissing noise coming from the brake pedal on my 2002 Ford Escape. Its been there for a little while. Sometimes the brakes doesn't work properly, it feels a little spongy sometimes. But usually...

It sounds like the rubber diaphragm in the brake booster has developed a leak producing the hissing / sucking noise. The only option is to replace the booster as a complete assembly as they need specialist tools to repair. If the booster fails completely you will still have brakes but the pedal will be very hard and it will take a lot of muscle power to stop vehicle. Best to have booster replced soon before you experience situation described above.

sounds like you have a bad vacuum leak. Look under the hood and listen to where the hiss or sucking sound maybe coming from. Use your hands and move the vacuum hoses around a little and hear for louder sound. It's hard to pinpoint the exact vacuum hose but there's only a few.

When u press on the brakes on my expedition, i hear air escaping.

If it is a constant hiss with your foot on the pedal, you have a bad brake booster. If you hear a hiss, and nothing else while holding the pedal, it is the air escaping from the booster boot, and should not pose a problem.

Have an 86 firebird with 2.8 v6 has loss of power

this can be caused by a plugged catalytic converter, the inside of the exhaust system can rust, break loose, and plug it up resulting in a loss of power. It can make a 'hissing ' noise when trying to accelerate, as the exhaust struggles to escape.
