Question about 1998 Isuzu Trooper

1998 izuso trooper 3.5 automatic, flywheel seems to be broken away from crankshaft. I can turn the harmonic balancer and hold the flywheel with a screwdriver and it turns without moving the flywheel?

    how is it connected to the crank? Key or bolts? I just don't understand how the crank could break and not seize the engine.

    The flywheel is fairly easy to turn at will with a six inch screwdriver. I can roll the engine with a wrench on the harmonic balancer and hold the flywheel in place with the same little screwdriver. Thats why I asked if the flywheel could possibly be attached to the crank by a keyed yoke system? If not I have a feeling the engines trash but still don't understand how this could possibly happen.

    I didn't think the crank broke but I guess you do. If you can wiggle the flywheel then it broke but if you can not then yes the crank itself broke. Am I understand the question?

    Sorry im not trying to come across smug at all. IM just trying to picture your issue with the info your giving. I agree 100%, it is very hard to beleave that the crank is bad but if it is then yes its junk. What I was saying is that it would make more sence to me that thr flywheel broke into two peices and the centering pin in the center of the torque converter is holding it inplace. there are five bolts and a dowel that hold the flywheel to the crank so it dont think the it failed in that area. But if you want to proof it out you can try pulling out all six spark plugs, try to start vehicle and see if the engine turns over, if it does, how many cylinders get compression, if all do then the probem is at the harmonic. But if you get nothing when you crank the engine over and you get compression when you bar the engine over manually then it should be the flywheel. Well good luck and please let me know what you find.

Removing harmonic balancer


First, you have to loosen the crank pulley center bolt. Best way is with an impact gun-bolt is very tight. If you have to use a breaker bar to loosen the bolt, you will have to devise a way to hold the crankshaft from turning backward while loosening it. One method is to remove the starter and wedge a piece of wood against the flywheel, preventing it from turning, while you are loosening the center bolt.
From the beginning: raise and block the side of car that the front of engine is towards. Remove the wheel and the inner fender splash shield. Remove the belts. Remove negative battery terminal, remove starter. Wedge the flywheel so it won't turn backward. Loosen and remove the center bolt. Some harmonic balancers will slide right off the crankshaft now, some are on very tight, if you can't wiggle it, tap it, and get it to move, then buy an inexpensive harmonic balancer removal puller, just a few bucks, easy to use, will save balancer from trying to hammer it off. All you need is enough room to mount up the puller to the balancer, and get the balancer moving off the crank.
Some engine lay outs there isn't enough room: then you really have to get creative, either lowering engine enough to get to pulley, or raising engine out. But most engines are positioned where the crank pulley can come off easily, with enough room to get the puller on.
The pulley may have a woodruff key in a slot on the crankshaft, and a corresponding notch on the pulley, for proper positioning of the pulley to crank. Don't lose the woodruff key.

How to change crankshaft sensor on 1999 grand price gt


To get to the sensor, the harmonic balancer pulley on the crankshaft has to be removed. The center bolt on the harmonic balancer is on very tight. To loosen without an impact wrench, remove starter motor and wedge a piece of wood against the flywheel, or use a pry bar and hold the ring gear on the flywheel rigid, while loosening the crank bolt. The engine will try to turn backward when you loosen the crank bolt, so you have to hold the flywheel rigid. Once the bolt is removed, see if you can get the harmonic balancer pulley off without a gear puller. Just try tapping it to see if it slides off, or use two screwdrivers on each side behind the pulley and see if you can start it sliding off. If it is on very tight, as many are, you will have to get hold of a harmonic balancer removal tool-a simple, inexpensive puller that bolts onto pulley and can be drawn off. You might be able to rent the tool too.
BTW, you will need to have the wheel removed from passenger side, and the inner fender cover removed to get to the crankshaft. Once the pulley is off you can unbolt the sensor and put the new one on. GM recommends using a sensor alignment tool to install, because the thin vanes on the back of the harmonic balancer pass through the sensor, and if not aligned right could damage one or the other. If you don't have the tool, put the sensor on loosely mounted, just snugged up finger tight, then test the pulley will slide through the sensor slots without touching either side of sensor. If it looks right, tighten down the sensor in place, install the harmonic balancer pulley and tighten the center crank bolt to about 105 foot pounds.
Wedge the flywheel again so the engine won't turn when tightening the crankshaft bolt.

Broke the harmonic balancer bolt on my 1994 Dodge Intrepid, can the car drive with the bolt broken off about 1/2" deep? It seems snug.


the harmonic balancer is slightly pressed onto the crank shaft. It does require the bolt to hold it into its correct position. If you drive it with the bolt broken the pulley will eventually work its way loose from the crank shaft. This will cause damage to the crankshaft and will cause the accessory belts to come off as well.

How do I take off the harmonic balancer on a 4.0 liter engine


You will have to take the belt off and then take the bolt out of the center that holds it onto the crankshaft. then You need a "harmonic balancer" puller, It has slots that bolt to the inner part of the balancer and you screw in the big center bolt. As you tighten the bolt it "pulls" the balancer. Here is a picture;

Crankshaft sensor on a Monte Carlo 2001 SS 3.8 where is this on the car and how to replace it?


3.8L Engine
  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Remove the serpentine belts from the crankshaft pulley.
  3. Raise the vehicle.
  4. Remove the right front wheel and tire assembly.
  5. Remove the right inner fender access cover.
  6. Hold the flywheel with a (J 37096) flywheel holding tool.
  7. Using 28 mm socket, remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer retaining bolt.
  8. Remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer, using a (J 38197-A) balancer remover.
  9. Remove the crankshaft position sensor shield (1). Do not use a pry bar.
  10. Disconnect the sensor electrical connector.
  11. Remove the attaching bolts from the crankshaft position sensor.
  12. Remove the crankshaft position sensor from the block face.
To install:
  1. Position the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor to the block.
  2. Install the bolts to hold the CKP sensor to the block face. Tighten the bolts to 14-28 ft. lbs. (20-40 Nm).
  3. Reinstall the crankshaft position sensor shield.
  4. Connect the CKP sensor electrical connector.
  5. Position the crankshaft harmonic balancer on the crankshaft.
  6. Hold the flywheel with a (J 37096) flywheel holding tool.
  7. Using a (J 36660-A) torque/angle meter, tighten the harmonic balancer bolt to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm), plus an additional 76 degrees.
  8. Install the right inner fender access cover.
  9. Install the right front wheel and tire assembly.
  10. Tighten the wheel nuts to 104 ft. lbs. (140 Nm.).
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12. Reinstall the serpentine belts.

3.8L Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the serpentine belt(s) from the crankshaft pulley. Please see Section 1.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4. Remove the right front tire assembly. Remove the right inner fender access cover.
  5. A flywheel holding device such as GM's J 37096 is required to keep the crankshaft from turning as the crankshaft balancer is being removed. Install this holding tool or its equivalent. Please see Section 3 for more information.
  6. Using a 28mm socket, remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer retaining bolt. Using special tool J 38197 or equivalent balancer removal tools, drawn the balancer from the end of the crankshaft. Please see Section 3 for more information.
  7. There is a roughly circular aluminum shield that protects the crankshaft position sensor; remove this shield. Use care not to damage it. Do not pry to remove.
  8. Detach the electrical connector from the crankshaft position sensor, remove the attaching bolts and separate the sensor from the engine block face.

  1. Clean all parts well. Position the crankshaft sensor to the block face and tighten the bolts to 14–28 ft. lbs. (20–40 Nm).

  3. Install the crankshaft balancer. Please see Section 3.
  4. Torque the crankshaft balancer center bolt to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm), plus an additional 76 degrees.
  5. Install the inner fender access cover and the right front tire assembly. Wheel nut torque is 104 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  6. Lower the vehicle.
  7. Install the serpentine belt(s), as outlined in Section 1.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable.

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

  1. Serpentine belt from the crankshaft pulley.
  2. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
  3. Right front tire and wheel assembly.
  4. Right inner fender access cover.
  5. Using a 28 mm socket, remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer retaining bolt.
  6. Crankshaft harmonic balancer using tool J 38192 or equivalent.
  7. Sensor electrical connector.
  8. Foreign object deflector.
  9. Sensor and pedestal from block face.
  10. Sensor from pedestal.
INSTALL OR CONNECT:

  1. Loosely install the crankshaft sensor on the pedestal.
  2. Position the sensor with pedestal attached on special Tool J 37089.
  3. Position the special tool on the crankshaft.
  4. Bolts to hold the pedestal to the block face, torque to 20-40 Nm (14-28 lb.ft).
  5. Torque the pedestal pinch bolt to 3-4 Nm (38-40 lb.in).
  6. Remove special tool J 37089.
  7. Place the special tool 37089 on the harmonic balancer and turn. If any vane of the harmonic balancer touches the tool, replace the balancer assembly.
  8. Balancer on the crankshaft.
    • Apply thread sealer (GM 1052080) or equivalent to the threads of the balancer bolt.
  1. Torque the crankshaft bolt to 140 Nm + 56°(104 lb.ft + 56°).
  2. Foreign object deflector.
  3. Electrical connector.
  4. Inner fender shield.
  5. Tire and wheel assembly, torque to 140 Nm (104 lb.ft).
  6. Lower the vehicle.
  7. Serpentine belt.

Hi,

vibrations over 55 mph are usually balance related (tire balance, drive shaft balance, motors)

vibrations at lower speeds are usually mechanical (bent rims, out of round tires, bad tie rods)
Therefore the suggestion for checking the harmonic balancer is perfect in your case.
