Question about 1995 Chevrolet Cavalier

2 Answers

I'm replacing the Power Steering Pressure Hose on my 1995 Chevy

The old P/S pressure hose in my 1995 Chevrolet Cavalier disconnected at the point where the metal meets the rubber, I need to replace it so I can get home from school.

I'm smart and reasonably good with tools, so I think I could figure it out eventually, but step by step instructions would be awesome. :-)

Well you will have to buy a hose first, and if you get the hose then you can replace it it's the high pressure side I am assuming and I am assuming you don't have rack and pinion. But you need to catch the fluid out of the PS pump cause if you spill it on the ground you could get a ticket and get dirty changing it. to remove it is easy get the right size line wrench to break the line loose it's a 15MM or 17MM then turn the nut counter clcokwise then do the same on the bottom no big deal.

Buy a new hose assembly and get some line wrenches the lines are very tight.when you remove the old hose it will spill some hyd. oil.catch it in something. install the hose and fill to the just above the add line.

If it disconnected where the metal meets the rubber you dont have to replace it. Cut it straight where it broke, and shove it bakc inside. expect some oil leaking, and tie it down wit a hose-tie (just like a cable tie made of metal, with a small screw)

It is much easier if you do these steps:

2. Remove the nuts holding the main fuse box over the battery.
3. Remove the reinforcing bar over the battery.
4. Remove the battery.
5. Remove the windsheild washer tank.
6. Now you have access to remove the pump pulley. Without removing the stuff, it may be possible, but it will be extremely difficult.
7. Remove the pump pulley.
8. Loosen the high pressure hose fitting.
9. Remove the return line clamp.
10. Remove the power steering pump mounting bolts.
11. Remove the high pressure hose fitting.

15. Install new o-ring on the reservoir.
16. Install reservoir on new pump.
17. Install clips to hold reservoir on pump.
18. Install new o-ring on high pressure fitting.
19. Place new pump in position while sliding on low pressure hose.
20. Loosely attache high pressure fitting.
21. Tighten pump to mounts.

  3. Remove power steering pressure hose bracket.
  4. Disconnect electrical connector at power steering control valve actuator.
    1. Install Steering Pump Pulley Remover T69L-10300-B on the pulley hub. CAUTION: Do not apply in-and-out pressure on the power steering pump shaft. Pressure will damage the internal thrust areas.
    2. Hold the small hex-head and rotate the tool nut counterclockwise to remove the power steering pump pulley.
    3. Disconnect power steering pressure hose at power steering pump and drain fluid into a container.
    4. Disconnect power steering return hose at power steering pump and drain fluid into a container.
    5. Remove four retaining bolts and power steering pump and power steering pump pulley assembly.
    6. Remove power steering pressure switch from pump.
    INSTALLATION
    1. Position the power steering pump on the mounting bosses of engine block and install the bolts at the side of the power steering pump. Tighten to 20-30 Nm (15-22 ft. lbs.).
    2. Connect the power steering reservoir pump hose to the power steering pump and reposition the hose clamp to power steering pump inlet fitting.
    3. Replace power steering pressure hose O-ring.
    4. Install the power steering pressure hose to the power steering pump fitting. Tighten the tube nut with a tube nut wrench rather than with an open-end wrench. Tighten to 34-46 Nm (26-33 ft. lbs.). NOTE: Swivel or end play of the power steering pressure hose end is normal and does not indicate a loose fitting.
    5. Place the power steering pump pulley on the power steering pump shaft and install Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacer T91P-3A733-A. The small diameter threads on the tool should be engaged in the power steering pump shaft. CAUTION: Do not apply in and out pressure on the shaft. Pressure will damage the internal rotating group.
    6. Hold the small hex-head and rotate the tool nut clockwise to install the power steering pump pulley on the shaft. CAUTION: Do not apply in and out pressure on the shaft. Pressure will damage the internal rotating group. NOTE: The power steering pump pulley face must be flush within 0.25 mm (0.010 inch) of the end of the pump shaft.

    2. If equipped, turn the air suspension ON.
    3. Install drive belt on the power steering pump pulley.
    4. Fill the power steering pump reservoir with Power Steering Fluid Motorcraft MERCON(r) ATF.
