How to set timing on toyota corolla 1.6 engine 4ac?

    I have the same problem assuming it's the same one. I can't get the timing anywhere near the correct positon. Its about 25 degrees off. And I've got 3 vacuum lines to the dist. one advances, one retards, and i don't know what the other one does. My next step is applying vacuum to the lines individually and seeing if the timing changes. If not, I need a new diaphram setup. I don't have a vacuum pump so I'm gonna hook them up directly to a vacuum source on the engine other than the original hook ups for testing purposes.

First the timing is easier to set with that big metal thing removed on the side of the engine. Next I set the No# 1 cylinder to TDC. If you remove the cap to the distributor it helps. They are 8mm bolts three of them.

Pull the plug and insert a platstic straw in the No 1 cylinder When it stops going completly up its at TDC I set it to 10 degrees BTDC by watching the marks on the front cranshaft pulley Never turn the engine backwards the timing belt cold come off. Sometimes its easier to remove the other plugs and turn it by hand.

Next remove the distributor Yes completly, not just the cap. Look at the 4 poles or tabs on the shaft inside the distributor and notice how they align up to the stationary pick up pole inside the distributor as the rotor shaft rotates. Put the rotor part on the shaft, and mark the spot when the rotor is pointing to the No1 spark plug wire position as it passes one of these poles This is your new timing mark.

Now put the distributor back in so the rotor is pointing to the No 1 postion or this mark. You now have a timing of 10 degrees BTDC or where ever the crank was set.

Tip: As the distributor goes in it will turn one way as it engages the gear So yu must lead the mark when you go to put the ditributor in by turning the shaft off your mark.

The distributor will rotate too, so you can align the timing mark you made on the distributor to the rotor shaft. I use white paint applied with a small touch up brush for my mark.

Also your mount bolt should fit in the slot cut in the bottom of the distributor to tighten it in place.

4ac engine. What causes backfiring?


This can be caused by improper engine timing. Has the timing belt been worked on? Consider inspecting it to see if the timing marks are lined up properly.

Another possibility is a too-lean mixture, cause by an air leak in the intake, or too-low fuel pressure. Inspect the flexible bellows in the intake tract for splits, and have a mechanic measure fuel pressure. I'd advise against the old method of measuring fuel delivery quantity in a given time, it is too dangerous.

I have an 83 corolla with weber carburetor that sputters and has white smoke coming out of the carburetor before shutting off. Is this a timing issue?


1983, a very old car. and worse a carb. (will need cleaning kit)
E80 or E90 (83' is both as option)???????
what country, lots of variance by , COUNTRY!
is compression good. check that.

we can answer with alacrity.

my guess is that white smoke is from engine back fire to the carb.
this caused by 2 things , bad spark or cam timiing.
or a very lean carb.

check compression 150psi or more.
check spark timing,
check cam timing if compression is low.
check for Vacuum leaks at this will cause the engine to go lean
at idle. on all carbs.

If you mean what is the ignition timing, it is 5 degrees before top dead center 5 degrees btdc. That's with the 4AC engine.

If it is a gts,they do not need calibration. The engine 4ac is: intake-.008 in. and exhaust-.012 in.

Remove the center bolt, get a pulley puller, and pull it off. You will have to get the correct type for your pulley.
