Question about 2000 GMC Safari

No power, sputtering, backfiring

My 2000 GMC Safari van sometimes will not get much power, sputters, and backfires. Then suddenly it will take off like nothing ever happened. This happens at random times and the shops I have called says it must be acting up when they see it, in order to fix it.

I have the same problem.
I was told the catalytic converter was plugged and replacing or removing it would solve the problem.
Check into it.

If You Have A OBD2 Code Reader,It Should Give You A Code And Tell You The Actual Problem,It Almost Sounds Like The Crankshaft Position Sensor Is Not Working Right,That Will Control Your Timing And If It Goes Out,You Will Get The Sputtering And Backfiring.Good Luck....

No power when hit the gas

The fuel presure should be at least 60- 66 psi key on engine off, and then drop some when started, if it doesn't go any higher than 50 psi that would explain your backfire concern. If it is low then the fuel pump is weak. I have also seen soot on the little wires inside the Mass Airflow Sensor cause a concern like this.
