2002 ford explorer 4x4 wont work

How can I tell which one of the switchs ect is out on my explorer without buying them all ! When I hit the 4x4 button it does nothing no clicks anything . I replaced the dash button and still nothing. I was told it could be either the computer in the dash that is around $200 or the piece on my transfer case or the other one. I dont want to buy $400 in parts just to get the right one and all the mechanics want to charge me $$$$ and keep it for 3 days just to try and see which one don't work.

Where is the fuel injecton shut off system in a 2002 ford explorer, I found the reset swith but can't locate the shut off system

The reset switch is where the 'inertia' shutoff switch is which will trip when getting hit hard from behind or hitting a bump in the road.

Hitting the button resets the inertia switch.

I have a 93 ford explorer 4x4 automatic. The 4x4 doesn't engage, or does anything when the button is pushed. Is this something simple to fix? Thanks Duane

This will take two persons to do...with a light hammer or mallet, hit the 4x4 motor on the transfer case as another person is pushing the 4x4 high switch, while the vehicle is in neutral and the emergency brake on, AND FOOT ON THE BRAKE.BE CARFUL NOT TO RUN OVER YOUR HELPER!!!! If it starts to work, replace the 4x4 motor. The inside of the motor gets corrodid from water and dirt.

I disconnected the electronic control on the transfer case and it seems to have unlocked the 4x4

At the back of the transfer case, near the top, there is a connector. I unplugged it and that seems to have disconnected the 4x4. My 2002 Explorer was stuck in 4x4, even though the 4x4 light was not on and I hit the Auto button a lot.

Auto 4x4 Suddenly Stopped Working 2002 Explorer Sport

  • sounds like you might have a bad transfer case solenoid which is activated when you hit the 4x4 button to engage the 4 wheel drive. I had the same trouble turned out to be that only takes about 1/2 hour or less to change. It is located under driver side just behind trans looks like a small round cylinder with about 3 wires, you may have to cut and splice them back but be sure to put color to color and either tape them with electrical tape or solder them and then tape them.
