Question about 1998 Jeep Wrangler

My 1998 Jeep Wrangler has started to lurch badly when I accelerate to highway speed (about 55 mph), but only after I've been driving for a little while. When I made it home this last time, the front driver's side wheel was incredibly hot and "ticking". What could be the cause and how can I get it fixed.

    The link provided showed only a list of other people complaining about Jeep issues. I need to know what might be wrong with the vehicle and how to fix it without dropping another $1000 on it.

    I'm not sure if the hot metal "ticking" at the front driver's side wheel is related or not, but I did notice it. I drove the jeep for about 25 minutes and stopped at a store. when I got back on the road and started to accelerate, the jeep seemed to be a little sluggish or have a lack of power and started to almost bounce and shake fairly violently (lurch may not be the right way to say it). When I slowed down the bouncing and shaking stopped, but there was still a noticeable lack of power when I started to accelerate again. As long as I keep it under 40-45 mph, it doesn't do the shaking. this is the second time it has happened and only starts after I've driven for a little while, stopped and then resumed driving. It is an "extra" vehicle that we don't drive much and it actually sat idle for the better part of a year while I was deployed to Iraq. Not sure if it is related to the engine, fuel system, or brake system. i appreciate your help on this.

    Sorry, I forgot to answer your ABS question...truth is, I don't know. I think it has the 4 wheel ABS.

The problem is that the hub bearing is bad ive seen this a lot on jeeps and cryslers,
its an easy fix ,the hub bearing will range from 60- 150 dollars depending on what it calls for
too replace it you can get a print out from auto zone for free ,or by a motor manual on it,

DO U HAVE 4 WHEEL ANTI-LOCK BRAKES? I AM NOT SURE IF U ARE GIVING ME 2 DIFFERENT PROBLEMS U HAVE, THOSE BEING "LURCHING" AND THE FRONT WHEEL HOT AND MAKING A TICKING NOISE LIKE REALLY HOT METAL, I,E, THE DISC BRAKE AT THE HOT WHEEL. Jerking accelerating


similar problems: After 20min cool down jeep was bucking/lurching that I traced to bad o2 sensor in exhaust manifold (which you've replaced is seems). The second problem of bucking/lurching, backfiring under certain driving conditions I traced to the battery sliding into the computer wiring harness, disrupting sensor input / output signals. I cured this problem by placing a 1" spacer on rear battery clamp, pushing the battery forward. Been years and no return of problem.

2008 jeep wrangler hood problem


I just bought a 2008 jeep wrangler and my hood is lifting 2 to 3 inches off the frame when I'm driving on the highway in wind speeds over 15 to 20 mph. I've owned two jeep wranglers in the past and I've never had this problem but chrysler keeps telling me this is normal. What's normal about a hood that is lifting off the frame?

Hesitating and no heat. Could these be related?


This sounds like multiple things. You do have a vacuum leak, it also sounds like the EGR valve is stuck. There is no reason to be replacing thermostats that often.

When the air temp. is cold motor cuts out and backfires at 55-60mph


Check intake air temperature sensor or MAF sensor. Also check MAP sensor and replace if necessary.

Obd2 system rediness status won't clear so I can run the smog test due to replacing the battery.

Fuel remained in fuel tank: 30 - 50% is recommended.
Time required: 16 minutes or less after started the engine.
Drive cycle pattern: One trip monitor (from start to ignition switch to "LOCK" (OFF) position. Well be completed while traveling with the following drive cycle pattern.
Test Procedure
Engine: start.
Accelerate until the vehicle speed is 89 km/h (55 mph) or more.

Test Procedure
Engine: start.
Accelerate until the vehicle speed is 89 km/h (55 mph) or more.
Travel for 300 seconds or more while keeping the vehicle speed at 89 km/h (55 mph) or more.
Decelerate until the vehicle speed is within 80 km/h (50 mph) or less.
While traveling at 56 - 80 km/h (35 - 50 mph) for 10 minutes or more, fully close the throttle at least once in 2 minutes and decelerate for 10 seconds or more.
Do not repeat deceleration too often.
Vehicle speed may go below 56 km/h (35 mph) after the deceleration.
Stopping and braking are permitted. (If stopped or drive at 56 km/h (35 mph) or less for more than 5 minutes the monitoring may be stopped. In this case please restart monitoring from the beginning.)

A/C switch: OFF.
Condition of A/T: Selector lever D range.
Time required: 16 minutes or more.
Drive cycle pattern: One trip monitor (from start to ignition switch to "LOCK" (OFF) position). Will be completed while traveling with the following drive cycle pattern.
Test Procedure
Engine: start.
Accelerate until the vehicle speed is 56 - 80 km/h (35 - 50 mph).
While traveling 16 minutes or more at 56 - 80 km/h (35 - 50 mph) with engine speed 2,000 r/min or above, fully close the throttle at decelerate for 5 seconds or more until the engine speed reaches 1,000 r/min or under.
Do not repeat deceleration too often.
Stopping and braking are permitted (Rapid deceleration and sharp steering are not permitted).
After completing the deceleration, bring the vehicle speed back to 56 - 80 km/h (35 - 50 mph) and keep it in the range until starting the deceleration again.
Repeat the above deceleration at least 8 times by fully closing the throttle valve.
Return the vehicle to the shop, then turn the ignition switch to "LOCK" (OFF) position

I have 2002 jeep wrangler at speeds between 50 nad 55 mph I get a vibration in the the front steering. I changed the steering damper and had the tires rotaded and balanced and i still have the problem.


have the mounts checked on the control arms, alot of times the can bend slightly due to a "curb" check. Call a local 4X4 shop and tell them you are experiencing the "death shake" they should know what you are talking about. That was the problem on my 02 TJ, i had replaced everything when i noticed that the angle on the control arm looked a little off.

Highway driving problem. City driving ok.


If you have been to three shops,I'll assume that all the basics have been covered. Did anyone check computer stored codes? What did they see? If you are going to try to fix it yourself, you will need to get a manual and check each and every component, one by one. Also, outside of the realm of computer stuff, check converter to make sure its not partially plugged. At low rpm city driving it may be flowing just enough to get by on. Also check that fuel is clean and has no water in it.
