SOURCE: low beam headlights do not work, but high beam headlights do

Clyde,

I've been troubleshooting this same problem on a different vehicle this week, and I can give you the steps I'd take.

1. If both sides went out at the same time, the problem is *NOT* likely to be the bulbs.

2. Check the fuses to see if both low beam lights are on the same fuse. Many cars have one fuse for low beam and another for high beam, so both lights out at the same time typically means fuse blown.

3. If the headlights are OK and the fuses are OK, then the problem is *LIKELY* the headlight switch. In my case, AutoZone has one and it can be installed easily; but in your case, that may not be as simple.

Please post your findings or comments.

SOURCE: Suzuki swift Headlight problem

Have you checked to see if this is a wiring problem or maybe a relay problem?

Recently my lights would work on side lights and not anything else and this was down to dodgy wiring and needed a new relay unit.

SOURCE: Jeep Headlights not working. High beam works

had the same problem on my 92....check under the hood on the drivers side, towards the front, there is a "junction box" with all of the lighting wires connecting from the switches to the lights. My wires were all corroded inside,so I cleaned the ends and bought a new box from the local electronic supply store. The problem has not come back.

SOURCE: Drl and high beams dont work

Check the bulbs -- the daytime running lamps use the highbeams on the resistor -- There are two filliments per bulb one high; one low. If both high beam filliments are out nothing will work....replace bulbs if this is the case.

loop the main beam to the second light simple ,find the feed with a meter when the main beam is on ,simple to do but be warned here ---make sure the light has a certificate of homoglonation and a E number in the headlight glass or you could face a big fine for unauthorised modification of a motor vehicle ,also this sort of work can only be signed off by a authorised garage with a Value Added Tax certificate and a inspection to change the cars papers at the local car testing station ,or dont drive in spain as they will impound the vehicle

My polo main headlights do not work but my full beam does work

Hi, the main headlights work through a separate fuse from the full beam. If all the fuses are fine the problem might be that the globes has blown on the vehicle. To make 100% sure that it is the globes, see if you get power to the headlights when the main lights are switched on.

Behind the headlights there is a plug that has 3 wires to the dip beam and 2 wires to main beam and the black wire is the earth so use a test light and put 1 end of test light to earth the other to either wire and turn on head lights it should light up if not then test the other wire if it lights then the other wire you tested was the one that isent any good .. so what you do is either clean contacts on the back of the globe plug or just put a wire from that wire on plug to any earth on the body or engine bolt and the light will come bright and make sure its fitted good and your job is done,, you now have goodlights.
Have a goodday Ron

Left headlight low beam went ouy, replaced it and still did not work. I figure it's the wiring But my shop manual headlight cicuit isn't shown.

Your problem sounds like either the globe (did you touch the glass on the globe if so that could be your problem as you musent touch the top part or glass with your hand (use a clean piece of cloth) and also change it with the other side light and if it works then its the head light plug or the wiring .
If you carnt find the problem with the wiring then take the colour from the light on the wire (main beam should be BLUE with White trace) so find the wire and run a new wire from the other side head light and it should work ..But make sure its not the globe first.
If the main beam light works on the left hand side then it carnt be the earth wire on the back of the light plug
1MAIN BEAM 2 DIP BEAM WIRE.3 EARTH WIRE so check the earth wire as well (let me know how you go) are you on Skype Ron

I have a problem with the headlights.low beam very dim and main beam only on left and right hand lights out completely. changed switch and still the same

You may have a bad earth on the lighting system which is causing a resistance.
This normally shows up as lights dimming when you turn more on , in some cases the lights will switch off altogether

Take a fairly strong wire lead from the negative post of the battery (Minus terminal) and put it on the metal part of the lamp housing to see if the lights brighten.

If they do then you need to clean off all of the earth points for the lighting circuit.

If that does not work then you need to hook a meter onto the supply cable for the dipped beam and check what voltage is getting there, less than 11.5v is not good.

If it is lower then you need to go back to yoyr light switch and check it there if it is 12v + then you have a high impedance connection down in the wiring loom.
