Its not worth 3,000 if it won't start, not a 3 series. MAYBE give him 1500- no start problems are very hard to diagnose in these cars.

Look on firewall in the middle behind the engine but on top and you will see the heater hoses. You should see a vacuum type valve. These types seem to go out after a few seasons. Try to move it manually. If you can't then it needs to be replaced.

What to look for when buying 96 chev cav 4 door

Unless its CHEAP, I would keep looking. These were cheap cars, and most people that bought them were cheap, and did not service them regularly. If you really want it, pay a mechanic to look it over BEFORE you purchase it. If its really good, the seller wont have a problem with that, If they do, then pass.

The starter relay or starter solenoid would be my guess, but I am wondering what the gears on the old starter looked like. If they were in really bad shape (deformation or chunks missing) you may need to replace the flywheel.

1996 Jetta Auto Trans Slippage

The automatic transmission in these cars are known for early failure. They are very complex and often cost more to rebuild than it would be to buy a new one. I know that many transmission shops wont even touch this car. Your best bet would be to search your local junkyards and find a transmission from a car that was wrecked (you know it was working when wrecked) or a transmission from a junkyard that will guarantee it's functionality. A new transmission will cost about $2,000 -$3,000 installed, depending on where you go. If the car is in good shape, it may be worth saving. In great condition it's worth about $3,000. Keep that in mind. If it's not in great shape, it might be a good idea to find a different car. Good luck.

Im looking at buying a 1999 bmw 323i for $4,250 it is in very good shape inside and out but heres the problem. its not running. He told me he bought and drove it for 6 months without one problem and then...

it sounds to me like the transmission is in failsafe mode. due to the complexity of the sensors involved with the trans operation, the problem could be as simple as a improper transmission fluid level, incorrectly adjusted shift cable, or more complex like a bad trans switch. I would recommend having it checked a dealer, so they could scan the system, and double check the installation.
