You really won't lose that much coolant in just changing the upper hose.
But, crawl underneath the front of the car, and somewhere along the bottom left or right hand corner of the radiator, you'll find a valve of some type. Either rotate/turn the valve, or pull and turn, to open. Be sure to have a clean bucket ready and under the drain while doing this, to catch the drained fluid.

Then remove the radiator cap to allow air in the top of the radiator and speed the flow. Drain only to a point in the radiator that is below the lowest point of the top radiator hose, probably the engine end. Close the drain.
Remove/replace the radiator hose. Pour coolant from bucket back into the radiator where the cap was removed. If it does not all go, then save.
Start engine and allow to warm up. As soon as you see the level drop (meaning the thermostat has opened) add more coolant, and continue doing so until no more coolant can be added. Replace the cap. Monitor the coolant reservoir and add coolant as needed to the appropriate fill line.
Do not store excess coolant where pets/animals could consume as it lethal such creatures.

does your heater work? if not than your thermostat is stuck. be careful not to get the car hot as those engines are sensitive and will warp the cylinder heads quickly.

Location of the engine diagram for a 2000 Buick Century. The engine has overheated when the coolant reservoir has water still in it.


On a cold engine, remove radiator cap, where applicable, is there coolant in the radiator? Usually the reservoir has cold and hot coolant levels marked on it. If it got too hot that reservoir would fill up in a hurry. When it got hot, what was the temp reading in degrees F? When it got hot, was the radiator fan running?
If your thinking thermostat, the engine side of upper radiator hose, should go to thermostat housing. Have to remove thermostat housing to get at thermostat.
Any applicable trouble codes? Some of the national brand auto stores will check po codes for free or use an obd2 code reader to check codes, yourself. There could be other issues, coolant temp sensor, gasket problem--if combustion gases in the coolant.

Why does my mazda drifter 2.5sleTDI the top radiator hose gets very hot and the bottom hose remains cold after a long trip.


The top radiator hose is were the hot coolant goes into the rad and the bottom provides cool to return.

My lower hose is cold and my top one is hot on my kia sedona why??


Thermostat is stuck or the radiator itself (as opposed to the coolant reservoir) is low on coolant and the water is not circulating. Could also be an airlock, and the system needs 'burping'. Open the upper radiator cap, run the engine to operating temperature and top up the water, squeeze the bottom hoses and then the top hoses. Be careful with hot water!

Car overheating


You may have a blown engine head gasket. Check your oil to see if it is milky because water is getting into the oil, and check the water to see if oil is getting into the coolant.
If you have either of these, you may need to have a new head gasket for the engine, and hopefully you do not have a cracked engine head.
This will require a fair bit of work to fix correctly. Your local garage or mechanic may be your next call.
There are some products you can use in the coolant for either of these, but it is only a temporary fix.

I have a 1999 mk4 golf 1.8 gti. i get no hot air blowing in and the engine temp rises alot when i go above 60mph


Low coolant level, failed thermostat, blocked radiator core or failed pump are all possible causes. Check them in the order given in the list as they become more complex and expensive to fix. Coolant level is easy enough to check, if low just top up at the reservoir. Whilst doing this check that the relief valve in the cap is OK and that the filler cap sits tightly when screwed down. For the thermostat drain the coolant (should be a bled valve for this purpose towards bottom of radiator) into a bucket and remove the 'stat housing and put the 'stat in a pan of simmering water. The 'stat plate should open up about 5mm. Take the pan from the heat and add cold water and the 'stat should close after about a quarter volume of cold water has been added. If the 'stat fails to open or close then replace it. Whilst the system is drained of coolant remove the top and bottom rubber hoses from the radiator. With a hose flush water into the top radiator opening and check if water exits freely from the bottom of the radiator. If there is a sign of blockage put the hose in the bottom opening and put the water on full pressure to back flush the radiator. Keep doing this until the water is clear. If everything up until now has been fine the last thing to look at is the water pump, either the pump has seized or there is a fault with impeller. When refilling the coolant system after any repair make sure that the interior heater is on maximum. When warming the engine up keep the heat on maximum and this will help displace air trapped in the system. Whilst warming up squeeze the radiator hoses regularly again to keep bubbles moving towards the reservoir filler. Keep the reservoir topped up as air bubbles work their way out. Only when the engine is nearly at running temperature tighten the filler cap. After having driven the car, let it cool off and check the coolant level, again top up as necessary.

2000 Linc Cont overheating. I replaced water pump, thermostat, belt & tensioner, blew through top hose out bottom (rad not clogged). Top hoses hot, bottom hose cold.


Do you have any coolant flow thru radiator with cap off?

Is thermostat in correctly?

Do a Combustion Leak Test at radiator or cap,
on gases from coolant. You may have a Head
Gasket going bad

Motor is overheating and coolant is bubbling from radiator cap. Top radiator hose is hot and bottom is cold


Sounds like your thermostat is stuck in the closed position, not allowing the coolant to cool the engine and then go back into the bottom hose into the radiator again. You should of pulled a code on this. TB's thermostats are notorious for going bad.

TO CHANGE RADIATOR FIRST YOU TURN OFF RADIO FIRST TO KEEP FROM LOSING RADIO CODE.DISCONNECT NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.RAISE FRONT OF VECHICLE SUPPORT ON JACK STANDS.REMOVE THE LOWER SPLASH SHIELDS.NOW YOU NEED TO DRAIN THE COOLING SYSTEM.CATCH COOLANT IN A LARGE DRAIN PAN.REUSE COOLANT IF ITS FAIRLY NEW.IF COOLANT VERY OLD CHANGE IT.PUT OLD COOLANT IN SOME EMPTY CONTAINER TAKE TO A GARAGE OR WHOEVER DISPOSE IT.DONT POUR ON GROUND.HARMFUL TO THE ENVIRONMENT.MOVE THE AIR INTAKE DUCT PASSES OVER THE TOP RADIATOR HOSE.NOW WHEN ALL COOLANT DRAIN OUT.LOOSEN UPPER AND LOWER RADIATOR HOSE CLAMPS.THEN DETACH THE RADIATOR HOSES FROM THE FITTINGS.IF THEY ARE STUCK GRASP EACH HOSE NEAR THE END WITH A PAIR OF ADJUSTABLE PLIERS AND TWIST IT TO BREAK THE SEAL THEN PULL IT OFF REMOVE SMALL COOLANT SURGE LINES FROM TOP OF RADIATOR THAT GOES TO THE OVER FLOW RESERVOIR..DISCONNECT COOLING FAN ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR.THEN REMOVE THE COOLING FAN.REMOVE DISCONNECT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION COOLER LINES GET READY TO CATCH TRANSMISSION FLUID THEN PLUG LINES. NOW UNSCREW THE FOUR BOLTS TWO ON EACH SIDE OF THE RADIATOR THAT ATTACH RADIATOR TO THE AIR CONDITIONER CONDENSOR CAREFULLY TIP TOP OF THE RADIATOR SLIGHTLY TOWARDS THE ENGINE.REMOVE THE UPPER RADIATOR SEAL AND LIFT RADIATOR FROM THE ENGINE.NOW IS THE TIME TO REPLACE THE UPPER AND LOWER RADIATOR HOSES WITH NEW ONES SINCE ALL COOLANT REMOVE I WOULD REPLACE THERMOSTAT AND RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP.NOW WHEN YOU GET READY TO INSTALL NEW RADIATOR USE SHEETS OF CARD BOARD PROTECT RADIATOR FINS AND CORES FROM DAMAGE WHILE SITTING RADIATOR BACK IN PLACE.ONCE YOU GET UPPER AND LOWER HOSES IN PLACE ALSO PLACE SMALL SURGE HOSES FROM THE OVER FLOW RESERVOIR TO RADIATOR NEW THERMOSTAT AND TRANSMISSION COOLER LINES ALL HOOK UP.
